Re: Amtrak Auto Train Discussion

Amtrak in the past identified a east-west route as Chicago-Phoenix as that had a similar pattern of “being annoying to drive by snowbirds”

Re: Amtrak Auto Train Discussion

You would have to find another super busy interstate route like I-95 that people would be willing to pay “to not drive their car”

Weird thought: Anderson is trying to find a reason to end the contract with Aramark and switch to a new commissary operator? Delta I know uses Gate Gormet..

Re: A Flight Plan For Amtrak

I’m not entirely hating Anderson; I do like his perspective. However yes he does not know how to run a railroad, but airlines derive most of their practices from railroads and ships so some things should translate. I’m not sure if he is consulting with his VPs about “Hey, how do we do X in trains?” ...

Re: Detroit-Toronto possible?

I remember not too ago, I inquired to one of my acquaintances at US CBP about this. Basically, it’s trying to simply staffing operations; the Maple Leaf used a mobile field inspection team that came up from the Peace Bridge that was basically in an overtime window; they were using for quite some tim...

I’ve been away too and aww jeez...that’s very sad to hear.

Mr Weaver was one of the greats that could in fact reinvent the wheel.

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

Wow. I didn't realize Customs was a separate stop on the Cascades It’s due to how the 2001 US-Canada pre-clearance agreement is implemented; US CBP Officers don’t have full powers on Canadian soil; this was remedied in the 2015 update that also allows for pre-clearance on the Adirondack. In practic...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

Once the Cascades becomes a full pre-clearance train, the stop in Blaine becomes super easy. As some of you are aware, the BC section is pre-clearance on the US Immigration at VAC; But in the recent amendments to the Pre-Clearance acts in both nations, the customs portion will move to VAC as well an...

Re: Top CEO of Amtrak-Your Opinion

Gunn at least focused on a "back to basics" attitude on state of good repair, fleet overhauls and keeping the system in order. He ordered the LTL and heavy express dropped by end of 2005 to speed up running times and avoid lengthy switching. I agree on David Gunn; I liked how he dealt with the poli...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

White Rock is single track, but that's not the issue. The tracks run along the beach right through the center of town, so there's lots of grade crossings, etc. BNSF keeps speeds to 25 to keep the neighbors happy. There are also some tight curves and unstable ground slightly north of the city. Yes! ...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

BNSF as I’ve understood thru several people I know does have some plans on the books for its BC operations, but the hold up is if/when White Rock is serious about wanting a reroute off the shore; they want provincial funds to offset the moving of the line..,

That’s how it’s done on the Cascades; Pre-Clearence crew for US CBP comes from YVR; CBSA crew comes from two blocks over!

I’m a little rusty but I think most of the outfits that you would outsource maintenance ops are union as well or have a cross craft agreement (do those still exist?)

From what I have been told, CN on its home turf is a bit more reasonable. The CN Jct for example, I’ve watched the conductors call ahead to CN dispatcher when running a bit late to hash out a plan.
