Lake Michigan Ferry Traffic

What specific traffic was typical on Lake Michigan ferries between Ann Arbor, Pere Marquette/C&O, and GTW in lower Michigan, and CNW, MILW, and SOO in Wisconsin? I'm sure there weren't many empties, but I'd also imagine there wasn't low-revenue traffic either. I'd imagine state-specific produce ...

Another question has popped into my head that should probably be placed here: What was the strategy in determining where a railroad would locate an off-line sales office outside of its "neighborhood"? It seems obvious to me that any railroad in the country wanted a team of sales reps in th...

In the pre-deregulation days before contracts, tariffs would dictate the rates and approved routes , along with how the shipping charges would be divvied up... The "approved routes" thing seems crucial here and I'm still a little confused. If the shipper had total right to route freight h...

The NYS&W survived because they owned a tunnel in Weehawken, New Jersey that the New York Central's West Shore Line needed. So...trackage rights through the tunnel kept the whole company afloat? Doesn't make sense. And after the WB&E was abandoned, what other traffic was on the line to the ...

The whole tariff system was incredibly complex. Railroads were members of rate bureaus which established rates in general, as well as routes which they all agreed on... Bureaus? As in...plural? How many rate bureaus were there and what was their legitimacy? This part is still foreign to me. Again, ...

Basically, what he said. Too much radio chatter on the same channel sucks, so keep everything short and simple. When the air waves are swamped with communication, don't be afraid to use the word "over" as a courtesy to both your own crew and other crews even though, depending on specific c...

While shippers dictate routing, railroads can influence routing. Railroads will typically try to maximize their length of haul or funnel freight to a favored interchange, using the pricing lever to do so. Whichever railroad has more bargaining power in a combination move will likely prevail. (An ex...

Where was the Soo in Duluth? I know where it was in Superior.

For that matter, where were the DSS&A yards? How did they both cross the harbor?

Was this bridge considered part of the B&A or the NYC proper?

A few maps I've seen suggests that the eastern part of the Castleton Cutoff was officially B&A, ending directly over the Hudson River.

So really, who "owned" the cutoff?

On a somewhat related topic of joint use rail lines, how did the PRR and NYC obtain trackage rights via the B&O from Ravenna to Niles Jct.? The NYC accessed this line from its Lake Erie & Pittsburgh subsidiary from Brady Lake Jct. via the PRR to RN Tower. Was there ever an effort by either ...

It was Fort Dodge.
Oops...I'm full of $h!t. It was Clarion. Fort Dodge seems logical until one learns a little more about how CGW operated its system.

CP wanted out of the leases on the 6400 series. What leases? If that's true, it's just more stupidity on CP's part. Those ICE 6400s are former BN units and, generally speaking, were better maintained and pull noticeably better than most of the DME units. Those are older and mostly former Milwaukee ...
