VRE & Metro reach deal for parking at Franconia-Springfield

As you now, Metro charges an extra fee for people parking and not riding Metro. VRE and WMATA (Metro) have reached an agreement to allow VRE riders using multi-ride tickets (Monthly, 5-Day Pass, 10-Ride Tickets) to qualify for Metro Rider rates for parking at the Franconia/Springfield Metro station....

Re: WMATA: Best time / line to catch non 7000 series trains

The older trains are not assigned to just one line. I've seen 2000/3000 series 6-car and few 8-trains between the 7000 series.
But this summer they've seemed to move the 6000 series trains to the red & green lines as I've not seen them in Virginia all summer

Long Bridge Study released - 58 more VRE trains & 8 reverse MARC trains

The study recommends a new two-track bridge across the Potomac, as well as keeping the current bridge in place. This expansion of capacity will improve the reliability of our trains, reduce travel times, and allow for the increase of passenger rail service. Overall, it increases our Amtrak service b...

Increase in CSX Freight Traffic causing delays for VRE & MARC trains

An increase in CSX freight trains operating in the Washington region has led to significant delays and worsening commutes for the thousands of passengers who ride commuter trains that share the same track, according to transit officials in Maryland and Virginia. MARC and VRE say on-time performance ...

Re: Using smartphone as SmarTrip is still in the cards for Metro, but other transit agencies are getting antsy

Meanwhile, MTA Maryland has launched the CharmPass app for all transit modes (including MARC). It's not that hard, unless you're trying to make it tap-to-enter. The same company that developed MTA's CharmPass app also developed VRE's Mobile Ticketing app. They are currently in the process of upgrad...

Using smartphone as SmarTrip is still in the cards for Metro, but other transit agencies are getting antsy

Some speed bumps for efforts toward making it easier to pay to get around using only a smartphone are driving potential division across the D.C. region. Metro has yet to release even a preliminary version of an app — promised last year — that would allow riders to turn their phones into virtual Smar...

VRE advancing expansion, mobile ticket changes

The expansion of Virginia Railway Express’ Broad Run Station at the Manassas Regional Airport in Virginia is moving forward, and the VRE Board is also authorizing additional efforts Friday to expand the rail yard at the end of the Fredericksburg Line. While not on Friday’s agenda, VRE is working on ...

Re: WMATA Summer 2019 BL/YL Virginia platform project

Metro's latest report on this summer PIP shows continued progress, especially of the installation of new tiling. https://www.wmata.com/service/rail/PlatformProject/Platform-tile-installation-begins-and-other-construction-updates.cfm The Franconia-Springfield station is barely 25 years old as it did...

Re: Metro - cause for 5000/6000 train separation

Of course, the 5000 series are no longer in service as Metro retired then in late 2018.
They should not have been mixing different series together, which they no longer do.

Metro suspends Automatic Door operations after doors close unexpectedly

Metro has suspended automatic door operations on the Red Line, just days after touting its return. While doors were opening properly at most stations, General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said Thursday that the doors were unexpectedly closing automatically. https://wtop.com/tracking-metro-24-7/2019/07/met...

Safety fixes finished, Metro to phase out ‘7000 Series train’ announcement

This is still a 7000 Series train. You just won’t be reminded at nearly every stop. Such announcements — which were instituted to warn blind riders that what seem like open doors could actually be a gap between cars — are being phased out this summer from Washington’s Metro system, now that safety f...

Metro plans more summer shutdowns for platform replacement

Over the next two years, Prince George’s County will see stations shut down, and Virginia will see more shutdowns as well. Current plans call for Metro to shut down eight stations for platform repairs next summer, and six others in the summer of 2021. Metro plans to shut down four stations along the...

I do not believe this is correct (and I think you're referring to ATO; I do not believe ATC was ever disabled). My understanding is that Metro is planning ATO return this summer.
I think I got confused between Automatic Train Control and Automatic Mode or Automatic Train Operation

Metro has no plans for ATC as 10th anniversary of deadly accident approaches

This weekend marks 10 years since two Metro trains collided on the Red Line between Fort Totten and Takoma after the automatic train control system failed. Nine people died, and the system has been operated manually ever since. Transportation Reporter Adam Tuss reports the agency is not in any rush ...

Re: Amtrak Bullying Commuter Railroads, Newest Target is SEPTA

Before 2010, Amtrak used to operate & maintain VRE trains. Amtrak was upset they lost the contract to Keolis. VRE still pays Amtrak to use Union Station and store its trains during the day, but Amtrak wants that storage area back. So, VRE is looking at a new storage facility. Also, Amtrak sometimes ...
