Re: Seaport District to Back Bay DMU Plan

I agree, the mostly-common design should be mostly proven out by the time the Orange Line pilot cars are qualified. But the thing that is no different from previous procurements is that every single car will be qualified before it enters revenue service, including the Red Line cars. This is as much ...

Plan to use Track 61 as a Red Line test track

Using track 61 to test Red Line cars insane. I can't imagine any reason they can't use the South Shore line after service (which ends prior to Ashmont service) or use the Cabot leads as F-Line suggested. $23m to temporarily electrify a section of track which won't carry a single passenger is an abs...

That would be the 01600s. The 01500s were originally built as individual cars, not married pairs.
Thanks for the confirmation.

Another big difference that NETransit doesn't mention is that, iirc, the Pullman Standard cars were all aluminum-bodied, hence the original silverbird paintjobs, while the UTDC cars have bodies built out of Cor-Ten steel, which is why they have only been painted in the late 70s Cambridge Seven-insp...

Just heard on the radio that the governor will not be pursuing the cancellation of weekend service. Nice trial balloon, though.

Nope, they're all still the original pneumatic cam controllers.

I updated my photo site with some pictures of the cars making their way to Codman after service Monday night. This move was 01477/01480. The pair 01469/01470 was moved late last week. https://sery2831.smugmug.com/Transit/01400s-Red-Line-Work-Train/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return ...

At least 2 of the overhauled trains from Alstom have their slewing bearings and/or center sections installed incorrectly. The slewing bearing keeps the 2 ends of the train together. At least 1 train is missing hardware from the slewing bearing. Isn't there a warranty whereby Alstom would be respons...

All vehicle programs have growing pains, which are built into the schedule to whatever degree possible. They'll pick up the production rate as time goes on.

Isn't fed money usually available for replacement cars?
Yes, Fed money is usually available. MA elected to procure that cars using 100% state money in order to get the process they wanted.

Speaking of distances: the huge billoard-size T logo looks really cool from a distance. I seem to recall that the huge T logo was pooh-pooh'd by many on rr.net back when voting on the paint scheme was underway. I secretly liked it, probably even voted for it. I guess the general public agreed (to m...

I just spent a few days riding the T, as I do once every few years. On a Red Line train going to Braintree I was surprised at a couple of stations in Quincy. The train-operator actually left the cab, walked out onto the island platform, visually scanned the length of the train, then re-entered the ...

I'm guessing the poster was actually operating an HSP, not merely riding in a coach behind it.

There's a big difference between a very small amount of work equipment workable for clearing snow, and having multiple trainsets of non-revenue equipment to run to keep the line clear. The Red Line has a flat car with plow (built in 1928 by BERy!), four OOS 1400 series work cars, two snowblowers, a...

They're literally pulling active cars out of service and sending them to Alstom. I'm surprised they aren't sending ones out that are already out of service for slewing bearing issues, missing parts, draft gear, etc: I completely agree. Send the ones out of service first, instead of just pulling the...
