"The Light" sounds like railroad-ese for "Long Island Lighting Co." Easier to say than "the power plant" or "Long Island Lighting"... Thus, .. .the coal train used the trailing point crossover east of Long Beach Road to shove across into "The Light" ...

I've sent a few LIRR paper records to RMLI (railcar equipment diagrams purchased from LIRR in the 1960s; and employee log books from a deceased engineer), and they were happily received. I don't know the extent or the sophistication of their storage area, but you might inquire there...

Time for a funny story, in response to the earlier question "Why does it take 3 Diesel switchers to deliver 2 coaches?" Decades ago, I ran an excursion on a midwestern regional railroad, with 5 passenger coaches and 4 engines, 2 at the head end and 2 at the rear end. One of the RR's owners...

The GE 44-ton center cab #400 was bought in 1950 for this service, as well as for other industries in the area. Not sure when this area went to zero freight customers, but 400 ended her days on LI putzing around Jamaica. It’s now at the Valley RR in Connecticut.

Wow! This appears to be the same consist as the September 30, 1962 excursion from Jamaica to Montauk and back. Can't read the names of the 4 cars, but 2404 led Tuscarora Club, Commack, Manhasset, and Jamaica on that all-day trip.

At least one of the steam locomotives has a place to run: LI G5s #39 is the subject of a multi-decade lease to Strasburg RR once its restoration to operational condition is complete, so it's got a welcome home railroad on which to run for a long time, once funding goals are met. You guys can help ri...

"If the work motors ran on their own power, who operated them ? NYCTA of LIRR crews ?" I have no direct knowledge of this particular incident, but typical RR practice would have the NYCTA cars operated by an NYCTA employee who is qualified on the equipment, with an LIRR employee who is qua...

Actuating rod linkages are pretty simple; they're "bellcranks." Imagine a capital letter "L" with a pivot at the apex, where the two parts of the "L" meet. Now push left or right at the top of the "L" and the bottom tip of the "L" moves up or down. T...

Looks to me like a busted/leaking LH radiator or failed water pump. There's what looks like coolant residue which has dribbled out the bottom flange of the radiator opening and onto the catwalk, then down the side of the frame adjacent to the radiator and 2 stantions rearward, as the coolant probabl...

Somebody in the paint shop goofed! "LIRR" is the AAR reporting mark for Lapeer Industrial Railroad, a 1-1/2 mile long shortline in Lapeer, Michigan, which is a short piece of old New York Central line interchanging with Canadian National. The paint shop guy shoulda painted "LI" o...

Regarding hack #22: In an article in the summer 1987 issue of the “Keystone,” PRRTHS magazine, by Bob Kaelin, the LI caboose roster is presented. Number 22 is shown as moved to Manorville in 1957, and then cut up. In the November, 1992 issue of the LIST/NRHS “Semaphore,” another roster is shown. 22 ...

Late to the party, but here goes: USA Ordnance Corps 1968-1972; then USAR 1972-1976. Last duty station was Fort Dix. I was the post Ammunition Officer. Middays with ammo handed out and nothing else to do until the unused rounds came back, would go down to the railyard and watch GE 44-tonner PRR #999...
