I visited the Albany area on a Sunday recently and had some questions about the short lines in the area. First, the Albany Port Railroad. I drove around through the industrial area and saw lots of freight cars, but only one engine, a CP. The port RR used to have its own engines. Do they still or do ...

It depended on the individual case as to whether passengers were satisfied or not. Someone was supposed to come through the train to inform each customer of the status of their car, and in most cases this was done. However at Lorton when all the surviving cars were announced, it turned out that abou...

I just spoke with my sister who was on the train. They arrived in Lorton safely and Amtrak is providing a rental car with a $100 credit card. She only found out that her car was among the missing when her name was not called to pick it up. Regarding the cancelled trains, There is an alternate route ...

My sister, who is on the Auto Train going north from Sanford today, just called me to say that the train has apparently derailed. The conductor told her that one or more of the auto carriers were off the track. She said that the train came to a jerking halt, but both she and her companion were okay.

East Penn is owned by Regional Rail which has been buying up a lot of short lines recently. Here is a link: https://www.regional-rail.com/east-penn-railroad-llc/ My local shortline, the M&NJ, is also owned by Regional Rail and uses two GE locos marked for East Penn, as well as M&NJ engines.

I was told by a man who is familiar with the area that the owner of the mine property wanted very much to ship his material out by rail, but that because of so many obstacles put in his way, he now trucks it to the Champlain Canal and it is moved by barge to its destination.

At a meeting in Utica on Dec. 3rd, trail people heavily outnumbered railroad supporters and were demanding that all the tracks north of Big Moose be torn up for trails. There is another meeting on Dec. 19th at NYS office building. The deadline for public comments is Jan 7th. If rail supporters conti...

Looking at Pietrak's book again, I read that Frank Sullivan Smith was described as a prominent citizen of Angelica and had been closely affiliated with the railroad starting when it was the narrow gauge Allegheny Central in 1881, until Mr. Smith died in late 1920. It was his dream to have Angelica c...

That spur crossed Seneca St. near Adsit street. There was a scrap yard there in the 1970s which loaded its scrap into gondolas. The spur continued along the bank of the Canisteo River toward downtown Hornell. I think it was taken out in the 1980s or perhaps the 90s. I rode a couple fantrips on the B...

I never rode the Caribou, but I did the next best thing. In Sept 1983 a friend and myself rode all the mixed trains. Then we visited the main office of the railway in St. John's. We asked if it would be possible to ride the freight all the way across the island. To our surprise the superintendent (g...
