hmmmmm, "i never heard of anyone getting hurt"- maybe it's my uncles fault. ;-) He enjoyed a beverage or two. He was the kind of guy that would run to the bar in south amboy during the engine change. Anyway one night traveling between Matawan and NYC he somehow woke up when the train start...

How and when were the CRRNJ passenger stations and associated parking lots along what is now the NJT Raritan Valley Line transferred to municipal and state government ownership? your post made me curious so i took a quick look at the Hunterdon County tax map for High Bridge (figured it's tiny so a ...

NJ TRANSIT rail customers have been forced to deal with delays, derailments and unreliable service because Amtrak, which owns the tracks our service relies upon, has neglected the maintenance of its critical infrastructure for years. For three-quarters of NJ TRANSIT rail customers travel patterns w...

As a kid I vividly remember the NJDOT/NJT open door policy on the NEC. Arrow set out of NY, the crew would leave the traps down and doors open from Newark Penn to Linden (N. Elizabeth and Elizabeth were still low level at the time). I believe it was the 4:10 Matawan local out of NYP to N. Elizabeth...

Put simply, the gates "time out". This is a very common occurrence at the Corlies Ave. Route 33 crossing in Neptune. The westbound train pulls into the Asbury Park station and the gates are already down, assuming the train isn't stopping. And now, the interlocked traffic signal at Corlies...

Well, despite some glaring flaws, it appears like this will get built. Funding just approved unanimously by PA board. http://www.nj.com/traffic/index.ssf/2017/01/billions_for_path_extension_bus_terminal_included_in_pa_spending_plan.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The p...

speculation i guess, but seems impossible to me that they would order otherwise. If they buy locomotives that do it why wouldn't they buy MU's that can do it? certainly any (reasonable) additional cost would be worth it for the flexibility it would afford them- no?

i know it's not "simple" but can someone explain for "dummies" why metro north can have such (apparently) awesome service at Yankees Stadium while the NJT service is so less than ideal. We go to a pile of yankee games, i tend to park in the lot just the opposite side of the MNR s...

I like the idea of the multi-use tunnels and platform you suggested. But as I see it, the planned 2 tunnel/track expansion specified by Amtrak's Gateway project is not enough. What happens when the two existing tunnels become completely unusable. Back to two tunnels/tracks. i always just assumed th...

all the wise points above aside- there is no infrastructure to build on south of matawan anyway. The "Pennsylvania" type cat was extended from south amboy to Matawan. But then from Matawan to Red Bank (and then points south to Bay Head if i'm recalling? )- they used the 'european'/constant...

When I was a boy, i lived in Matawan and "commuted" on weekends to visit my father in NYC and later Elizabeth. When I started it was NJ DOT and hodgepodge cars and diesel power with an engine change in South Amboy. Then they added the electrification to Matawan. Then later they added the M...

anything new? i just randomly scrolled to the section the bayonne bridge and it basically says "coming soon in 2013" or something like that. Made me scroll back to the cover page and it does say 2015. So did they just slap a new coverpage on the years old plan? (not that there is any money...

I suspect it was just off the north side of Cliffwood Ave (as Kaback describes just east/north of Anchor Glass) as opposed to just south of County Road. And if you look at the railroad map at the link above that seems to indicate closer to Cliffwood Ave. Cliffwood Ave is a main thoroughfare in the a...
