Here are three shots of mine from the early 1980s that show the smashboards in the open position for a rail movement.

Re: Calais Branch

In the late 1960s/early 1970s time frame the Maine Central scheduled a daily freight between Bangor and Calais, trains BC-1 eastbound and CB-2 westbound. A daytime local out of Calais handled local switching, and the Eastport branch as required. I'm sure that a similar Bangor-Calais job ran in 1958,...

Re: Metro North E Unit Questions

The E8s weren't the only diesels in GCT during that severe power shortage. Former Conrail B23-7s and ex-NH FL9s with inoperative third rail gear could also be found on MN trains in the caverns. And the cloud of confined exhaust from a pair of E8s when they started up was something (unhealthy) to beh...

Re: New Dinky to Nassau Street

it seems to me that if NJT runs out of functioning Arrow 3s, they could "isolate" the line from the national system to get
out from under FRA crash standards and such and run some basicallyoff -the-shelf DMUs like the River Line cars. They'd only need a couple.

It should be noted that in addition to the above, Amtrak leased about 200 assorted cars from Penn Central at startup for use on high density Northeastern routes. Most of these would eventually be purchased, but that didn't come until a year or so later.

Re: Abandonded Stations on Existing Commuter Rail lines

The number of stops cut circa 1965 right after MBTA subsidy began is quite staggering. Or was it "rationalization" as a condition for continuation of passenger service under MBTA? In addition to closure of little-used station, it had to do with the nature of the state subsidy. The MBTA wa...

 by TomNelligan ¦  Wed Jun 03, 2020 8:25 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Operation during civil unrest ¦  Replies: 7 ¦  Views: 1419

In Boston, the MBTA has basically continued running its reduced commuter rail schedule out of North and South Stations, neither of which is in the immediate vicinity of downtown protests. However on several occasions trains have skipped stops at outlying stations where demonstrations are occurring n...

If an all-sleeper train were profitable, I wouldn’t care or view it as politically incorrect but perhaps the “let’s all be equal even if it means that we all must live in poverty” crowd might. Isn’t the Acela exclusive? I don’t hear criticism of it in that basis. With respect to the pricey Acela se...

Politically, it wouldn't work, even if equipment was available and it worked economically. An all-sleeper train would be correctly seen by Congress as a deluxe accommodation for fairly affluent travelers, like current private cruise trains, while a major part of Amtrak's mission as a public entity i...

What would the milepost prefix have been for the Marblehead Branch? I see BM was used for Middleboro Mainline Back when the Swampscott -Marblehead Branch existed (up until the late 1950s), the Boston & Maine numbered Eastern Route mileposts from North Station with a "B" prefix, and I ...

Probably a state regulatory requirement or a charter provision that required the railroad to provide passenger service on those routes, although it was a stretch to call accommodating one or two riders at a time in a caboose "passenger service". The Soo Line certainly didn't do it for the ...

Favorite: any of my several trips in the late 1970s and 1980s between Vancouver and Calgary on the CPR and then VIA Canadian . Least favorite: Probably a summertime Chicago to Seattle trip on the North Coast Hiawatha in the pre-HEP days circa 1978 when one by one the air conditioning failed in each ...

I can answer two of those questions. 1) If the cut there dates to 1900, how far towards Grand Central did steam haul the trains? All the way. Electric operations at GCT didn't begin until 1906, and the terminal wasn't all-electric until July 1907. 2) Was the cut electrified in 1912? Yes, the NH elec...

How about the former New Haven catenary bridges between New Haven and New York? Most of the originals are still in place and in use. West of Stamford on the mainline they date to 1907, east of Stamford to 1914.
