ND Paper was looking for a source of pulp when they bought the Rumford mill from Catalyst. #10 and #12 machines make white paper while #15, the largest machine in the mill has been converted to make brown packaging paper. #9 machine was converted into a pulp baler. If the customers for the paper pro...

This rumor bubbles to the surface every few years- I remember reading a version of it back in the period between the bridge fire and CN's sale of the line to Emmons/SLR. While the remains of the Back Cove trestle and swing bridge would probably need to be removed, acquisition of adjacent property mi...

Went by Danville Jct. this afternoon and QG 6904 was sitting at the end of a cut of cars on the former MEC
mainline where CSX leaves deliveries for SLR.

Some of the earlier speculation I had seen ( i.e. " business incubators " ) left me expecting little more than another underused warehousing facility. If this pans out, and the man behind the development certainly has the experience, this puts the woods operators and others involved in the...

I'm not Fritz but 393 has been west through South Paris after 2200 pretty consistently the past couple
of months, returning eastbound about 5 hours later, usually 4 days a week- Mon-Tue-Thurs-Fri.

Over the past several weeks, demolition has removed most of the old IP Otis Mill in Livermore Falls, last operated by Wausau Papers. When I was by this morning excavators were working on the remaining structures close to the river. Next to the street and railroad only the clock tower remains standin...

Quite an ensemble of power at Lewiston Junction this afternoon including 3035-4024-3008-806-3806-4023.
4023 appears to be in a consist on the fuel track- has it been placed in service? I've heard some horns during
the night that are definitely "different" the past week or so.

RUPO arrived at Leeds Jct with 5948-5933 and 52 cars about 1130 and PORU arrived with
5972-7575 and 51 cars about 45 minutes later. Looks like the era of the GP40 is winding down.
Photos show the two versions of RUPO at Libby's Pit and at Danville Jct. I made a mistake
captioning the photos - sorry

Steam under pressure from the boiler, typically between 160 and 250 psi, pushes a piston in the locomotive cylinders connected by main rods to the crank pin on the main drive wheels, causing the wheels to turn. Not really all that different in principal than hot expanding gas pushing a piston connec...

SLR's new power, SD70MACs 4022-4023-4024 arrived at Lewiston Junction this afternoon. After backing some freight cars onto the branch and returning to the ML, units backed eastward down ML and then pulled into the east engine house lead, cut off trailing two units and pulled 4023 into the house. Aft...

Happy holidays and best wishes for the new year, everyone!

I was fortunate in that GT conductor John Egan invited several friends to accompany him on a daytrip to Quebec to see 6060 on it's first outing, a round trip from Montreal to Victoriaville, PQ by way of the St. Hyacinthe Subdivision on 15 September 1973. I was a senior in high school at the time and...
