Re: Illinois Amtrak Service

UP (Amtrak) and NS will be consolidated into one ~3 track right-of-way; most grade crossings on this alignment have already been, or are in the process of being converted into viaducts. The new alignment is also adjacent to a new downtown terminal recently built by the local transit district, and I ...

One further thought about Amtrak's own delays: At least at downstate Illinois stations in the last few years, they seem to check tickets on the platform a lot, even when the train comes in late. Sometimes this is clever and helpful -- one conductor had noticed the size of each group and noticed whi...

I heard that only one Charger is in service Chicago-Milwaukee and two are testing as trailing units Chicago-St. Louis. What kind of issues are keeping the others from being in service? Andy CHI-STL trains don't have a Charger in the lead because they haven't yet gotten the proper cab signaling/etc ...

Heat from the exhaust and dynamic brake grids would burn and discolor said wrap.

Anyone know what kind of consists the CL is currently running? I'll be making a WAS - CHI trip on #29 next week (in sleeper). Last time I rode it was in the dead of winter, about a year and a half ago, and I've had better trips; sleepers up front and only one locomotive with no baggage car, so the h...

My paycheck is signed one of the entities involved with this order of cars (although I'm not in the same department and have no direct involvement). My limited understanding is that a) , a method has been found to keep the funding "alive" after the approaching deadline, so b) , the cars WI...

As of this writing, Lincoln Service train #304 has a Charger in the trailing position, behind P42DC #62 [didn't catch a number on the 46XX unit - too far away].If this consist has remained unchanged since its last visit at CHI, it left there at 9:25a yesterday as train #303 (which best I can figure,...

I suspect it isn't. A buddy of mine rode the Lincoln Service last weekend and kept an eye on his phone's GPS during that segment. Said the speed never rose above ~79 mph.

A clue: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ethover/21068964683

Someone in the comments references METX 217 being a "parts unit."

Edit: Also, this Progress Rail facility in Georgia is ... pretty small!

This is correct. Theoretically you can walk from end to end in both the Blue and Red line subways, although there's one closed former stop in the Red line subway (Washington) which I think has "do not enter" signs posted on both ends of its platform area. If you snuck around them and a CTA...

Not sure when they don't double head them, perhaps some of the issues are related to engine-coach MU connections and the trailing engine is not hooked up to HEP or MU cabling, just air. That's speculation. If there's several people on board who might need access inside the locomotive, it's probably...

54th/Cermak on the Pink Line has a funny arrangement with its platform as well - it's a single platform but long enough to hold two eight-car trains [accessed from the far track by a pair of strategically-placed crossovers] with some kind of fence/barrier in between that I think can be walked around...

Realistically, this is kind of an optimistic goal for a Sunday (Metra service intervals: one train every two hours). You could spend hours trying to shoot the -two- trainsets being used on the BNSF that day. If you want to see F40s, a better bet might be to venture up to the Clybourn station on the ...

Pretty obvious work is being done at street level (including the temporary closure of Wabash right underneath where the new station will be), but as of last week (last time I was in that area of the loop), a completed station is still pretty far off.

Yeah, after that last post I went snooping around on the internet and found some other post about the final trip being a one-way run to University Park on train #117, and the return on #122 being on new cars. No idea if it's true or not but there are a couple weeks to find out. It would be a no-brai...
