Re: LIRR Mainline Third Track Project

Noticing these new poles being erected along the Main Line. Seems to be for third rail feeder power. I thought they would all be metal. Also noticing that they are not high tension ones like on the South Shore. Not sure if these are just temporary because if not it's disappointing to say the least. ...

What's the logic behind some of the Jan.8 changes?

So the next phase of Amtrak's renewal work starts with much more minimal impacts then the "Summer of Hell" (which it clearly wasn't). Though I'm not sure why the LIRR decided to cancel the 5:06pm Huntington train & combine it with the 5:17pm. Both of these trains are fairly crowded, an...

Honestly no reason why there shouldn't be a barrier. Lets hope the LIRR has some common sense & installs one soon. It's a miracle no one was seriously injured considering all the trains & people that pass thru Mineola.

Greenport trains bypassing Riverhead due to Broken Rail

On Monday. They must've used one of the other tracks through Riverhead (Museum?) that cant access the platform. Can't remember the last time that happened. Link to tweet. https://twitter.com/LIRR/status/932557786952667137 On their Facebook Westbound customers traveling from Greenport to Ronkonkoma c...

LIRR Track work at Freeport - Mechanized Tie Replacement

IMG_0045.JPG Looks like once again the concrete ties are expanding eastward on the Babylon Branch. Got a glimpse of the work at Freeport on Saturday afternoon. I still wonder why this isn't being done on other busy branches such as the Huntington & Port Washington which are stuck with aging woo...

Harold Signal Pre-Test schedule errors

I see that they will be pre-testing the new signal system for HAROLD this weekend along with Nov 4&5 and 11&12th. However I have noticed some errors in the schedules. Service between Huntington & Penn Station will run hourly instead of every 30 minutes, however the Ronkonkoma schedules d...

I hope they shift more trains to Atlantic or Hunterspoint, or even Jamaica instead of cancelling them outright. On most branches except for the Babylon most rush hour trains are already fairly full. By diverting to Atlantic it gives an option of at least connecting at Jamaica or taking the subway to...

Starting with the May schedule change, platform work moves to overnights as tie work takes over the midday outages, which are extended to run PORT-AMITYVILLE. So this project will put in new concrete ties & rail out to Amityville? Once again the Babylon is always getting the best while everythi...

What was with the "wall" look where the concrete pillars are now? Take a look at the Westbound platform in this photo of Westbury in 1978, they were also found New Hyde Park, Carle Place, Syosset, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington etc. Also the mushroom light bases were IN the platform, not ...

Personally all the stations should be reconfigured with island platforms (New Hyde Park, Merillon, Mineola, Carle Place, and Westbury). There should also be Canopies just like on the Babylon Branch. These stations need modernization badly, and considering the heavy use of some of them (Mineola, West...

Wow...so there was a derailment yesterday too. The LIRR must've done a good job keeping it from the media as they only reported on today's derailment. Yesterday's incident near Jamaica didn't even generate service alerts except the vaugue messages regarding delays due to a "late train ahead&quo...

Jamaica Track Work Today

First time I've seen this, today (Sunday 7/17) all eastbound trains are on Tracks 4 & 5, with tracks 6, 7, and 8 closed for track work. Westbounds come in on the usual 1,2, and 3, and I saw a Montauk diesel use track 3 (usually they use 1). In the afternoon, the 4:20pm train to Babylon came on T...

One interesting point re: the 1972 Chicago wreck pictured above is that when the first train finally stopped beyond the platform, it had also passed into the next signal block. When it backed up, it re-entered the block it had previously cleared. By then the following train had already entered that...

Oh I see. Now I have seen that before.

Looks like it happened again, another Ronkonkoma train, missed Deer Park by accident. Got this in my email Customers on the 6:53PM train from Penn due Ronkonkoma at 8:12PM who were unable to detrain at Deer Park, will exit at Brentwood. Customers will be accommodated by the next westbound train whic...
