I presume you've heard of Stuxnet, Wannacry, and others. These are not tin-foil-hat speculations; this is real stuff happening in this day and age. To pretend it's not real…
To pretend it is not real is truly Presidential these days.

Re: Train Dispatchers

As I understand it the way this is set up is something like Conrail Shared Assets, owned by both the Florida East Coast and All Aboard Florida. I assume it is working out all right as I have not heard much of anything negative from their folks from other sources. Noel Weaver Have you heard if the D...

Re: FEC Freight Train Schedules?!?!

There are multiple extraneous things that affect when trains actually do run, despite when 'you think' they are scheduled. While it is not FEC - CSX adjusts their schedules on a weekly basis so as to mesh train operations with MofW curfews that take place on various segments of the network. With NS ...

Re: Reading List: EHH

It's been a few years and one career later since "I've been working on the railroad" (and plus, my road is kaput), but I can only imagine the conflicts occurring today between Traffic/Marketing and Operating as more roads adopt "The Gospel According to Saint Hunter", otherwise known as Precision Ra...

Re: The Mystery of Trains 301 and 306

Odd that the public TTs of the period still show the Jim Thorpe-Wilkes-Barre service, but all other stations between are freight only, including Penobscot, even though the trains met there at 0245 and changed crews with 10 minute station stops for both trains. Still a very odd operation. Not unusua...

Re: VRE & Metro reach deal for parking at Franconia-Springfield

Personally - I view parking fees as a impediment to people using either service. Now if the Metro or VRE long term tickets were the medium to gain entry to the lot, that is another thing; ie. making the parking fee included in the transportation fee. The aim of both VRE and Metro is to get people ou...

Re: Positive Train Control collision on CSX

Excerpt from Trains Magazine on-line article of 8/26/19: PTC was active on the line at the time of the predawn collision near Carey, Ohio, on CSX’s former Chesapeake & Ohio route between Columbus and Toledo, according to people familiar with the matter. But the safety system had been disengaged on ...

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

Did a little research - the B&O branch from Weverton to Hagerstown was called the Washington County Branch. Part of it south of Hagerstown is active but much of it has reverted to adjacent owners, and it looks like a major bridge has been removed. mmi16: it doesn’t follow I-70 or cross the same rid...

Re: CSX Hiring

Railroad employment needs do fluctuate. When newly hired employees get furloughed those in the pipeline toward employment are also stopped until the manpower needs of the railroad change and they start calling back what they can of the furloughed and restart the employment pipeline for new hires.

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

As I recall, the Weverton to Hagerstown line was abandoned about the 2nd day after the B&O (Chessie System) took over operating control over the WM. Hagerstown traffic was routed over the WM line from Cherry Run account a much more favorable grade situation (even though coal trains did require a he...

Re: Expanded DC/Baltimore Commuter Rail Proposals

From the MARC HHP-8 thread: Would be nice to electrify the Camden and Brunswick lines, but I’d rather focus on rebuilding to Annapolis and a “dinky” to Westminster. I’d love to figure out how to connect to Hagerstown, Ocean City, and York, PA too, but those aren’t best served by train in my opinion...

Re: BNSF and UP PTC letters to Congress

The whole PTC debacle is self inflicted. Back in the 1920s the government had railroads install ATS and or cab signals on various lines. Over time many of these installations have been eliminated. This facilitated the elimination of the maintenance, of course, but relieved keeping a certain pool of...
