Re: Mount Hood Railroad (MH)

My understanding is a local group wants to bring the railroad local again, but we'll see how that goes. A local group bought the MH in 1987 from Union Pacific, and sold it (at a loss) to Iowa Pacific. IPH did do a few things - brought in more passenger equipment to replace some of the very worn out ...

Maybe, Amtrak could start ther...

Re: Cascadia Rail High-Speed-Rail HSR Vancouver-Eugene-Spokane

The other issue is the absolute lack of a straight, flat, level routing between Seattle and Vancouver...you either have to contend with building over the Sound, on top of wetlands, or up and down over hills. How do you serve Bellingham, surrounded by water and hills, without drastically slowing down...

Re: Cascadia Rail High-Speed-Rail HSR Vancouver-Eugene-Spoka

If they try to build this all at once, it'll be a disaster and probably not even get funded. If they try to do Seattle to Vancouver or Portland and take some wins, it might work. That means taking all the pie-in-the-sky cornball stuff out of our heads. No Spokane, no Eugene, no Boise... One of my c...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

wigwag: it sounds like you’re saying, dump the Eugene-Seattle-Vancouver Talgo turns and either use a dedicated, smaller trainset that only runs in the Willamette Valley, or abandon all Eugene service but for buses and LD service. How close am I to the mark? Ditch the PDX-EUG market by rail, let the...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

Here's a chart with the Cascades ridership in Oregon: https://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/About/GR/Q-1_2019_Ridership.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Train 511 has very low ridership, mainly due to lack of feed from WA. Its departure time of 945am is too early to allow connections from t...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

It isnt that simple. Trains need to be serviced. And only having 30 minutes means if there IS any delays or snags enroute that will end up making a cascade of delays for any trains later in the day the set would use. At some point trains need interiors cleaned between runs. i dont know the distance...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

Cascades trains are still running along the shore route. There are 4 roundtrips a day plus the Starlight. I heard that the service will stay at 4x a day once the route is switched back to the Bypass because there aren't enough trainsets available to cover the 6x a day schedule. If Trains 511/513 an...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

I think there's generally a pretty negative perception of buses. When we see them on movies, it's generally a less glamorous part of town or a character down on their luck. I hear Union Station is in a very different part of town, the ritzy part of Portland, than the Greyhound depot. Wait, they're ...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

WRT 3, it's not a hell of a lot faster. Bus schedules are essentially the same as train schedules, at 4 hours or worse. Which supports my contention that Amtrak could eat the buses if they were priced better and had more frequencies. Bolt Bus Portland-Seattle is 3 hours 15 minutes; Amtrak is 30 min...

Re: Portland-Seattle-Vancouver High Speed Rail

Interestingly apparently the BC /Washington State / Oregon government are all looking at high speed rail Oregon has been looking at "high speed rail" since the 1970s. Nothing new, nothing different. The studies (I believe there have been six of them) all ended with the exact same conclusion: Oregon...

Re: Amtrak Surge Capacity & Reserve Fleet

Sounds like a possibility if Amtrak replaces the Superliner fleet (or decides to go to their "corridor-only" model), for someone to buy some of the Superliner stock and lease it out. Establish a yard somewhere in the desert southwest (just as the airlines store unused aircraft) and set up a shop to ...

Re: Rethinking HEP and LD power

True, I have looked longingly at the ex-ATSF GP60s and B40-8Ws for instance... I have wondered the same; I know several shortlines that have picked up B40-8s on the dirt cheap and are running them in slow speed service. UP runs their GP60s like a SW-1500. And the ex-LMX B39s are rusting to the rail...

Re: Rethinking HEP and LD power

I don't think HEP would stay on during the engine changes. Why would they leave a diesel generator on the train in electric territory? Think the Empire Builder at Spokane. I've sat through the 90 to 120 minutes where the train is disconnected from the locomotive without connecting the train to the ...

Re: All Things Cascades incl Vancouver

it should have a stop just like any other town of 50,000 to 100,000 prosperous, car-lite households full of people with affinities elsewhere. That's what the Tacoma stop is for. Should Cascades also stop in Milwaukie and Junction City, too? Or a stop in St. Johns and another one on the north side o...
