I just heard about this on the radio. I haven't checked this forum in a while. Coincidentally, tonight I just talked to a close friend of a recent member of Metra's board, who I also worked with on railroad projects about ten years ago. I know he (one time board member) knows trains and dollars. Wel...

When I was in high school taking a photography class everyone on a trip made arrangements to take Metra since school buses were always way too slow in the morning.

I think what happened is that Metra announced a request for proposals for 611 and 614 and they got no proposals from any qualified bidders.

The F40PH model was factory painted that way by Life-Like, along with the BN E9 scheme. Looks like they were trying to cover all the Chicago commuter lines with the closest model they had. I imagine not many Nortran models were sold outside their territory. http://tycotrain.tripod.com/lifelikemodelt...

I happen to read Robert Poole and Randal O'Toole stuff with interest. They are contrarians against central planning everything. The arguments O'Toole made against fuel tax hikes and public projects at this time are sound. And my employment happens to benefit any time municipalities build things. I d...

The trolley museum uses stingers quite often, though on the trolley pole shoes, not the third rail shoes which are supposed to be disconnected. Also, similar grounding cables from the trolley wire to the bonded rail for different kinds of above ground work. I was in NYC in August 2001 and was defini...

I think at least one person on the Metra board will push for as many commemorative paint jobs as they can get away with.

Would have been nice if 100 had an actual RTA paint job and not just a wrap. I like that scheme.

Metra had shown a drawing with the SD70ACe body style in Metra colors, which is probably wrong. I read elsewhere that these would have two axles powered and one unpowered on each truck, either A1A-A1A or B1-1B. You could still have 6 inverters- 1 for each traction motor, 1 for HEP, and 1 redundant. ...

I thought Metra was already having N-S build more new cars through an option order from VRE. What ever became of that? It is too bad N-S has had all these problems in the U.S. market. They should have been the best option for Metra just to keep things simpler. Why not build the cars overseas again?

I once saw a Metra conductor try to reprimand a person who crawled under the train I was on to get to the boarding side, saying he was going to get turned in to Amtrak police downtown. But he just ran off the train at the next stop. This was over twenty years ago.

Apparently "Atlantic & Pacific" was its charter name, and "Chicago & Pacific" by the time of construction. I think C&P is still referred to in some ways, and C&M ("Chicago & Milwaukee") for the north line. "Chicago & Evanston" was the b...

I think from the outside one of the features of rehabbed cab cars is black rubber placed around the rear door area. Does this mean a tubular style diaphragm? On the cab end of the car? That would be quite a change. It would help if a Metra train has to be coupled to Amtrak Superliner equipment for ...
