Re: Unofficial R42 Retirement & Scrapping Thread.

After being "stored" in reserve, R42s returned in service 1/8/20. Everyone: The R42 cars saw decades of service for the NYC Subway system. These cars were the first full series that were of an MTA design - built in 1970-71. With a full overhaul and rebuild they would literally reach 50 ye...

LOL Height of the structure wasn't a problem at the Smith/9th St. Station in Brooklyn. So why not on the Hellgate Viaduct? Smith and 9th was planned to be a station from the beginning when the IND subway was being built. The Hell Gate viaduct never had a station connecting to the subway at Ditmars ...

Seems like the FAA wants that 3 mile extension for the N,Q,and W lines over the air train to willet's point. That "Off site" parking lot for employees would as become "Overflow" lot for airline passengers. Not cost effective, but a HUGE waste of $$$$ if air train was built. :P :P...

Fully agreed. Extending the N/W is the most practical choice. Why the Governor and the Port Authority are so afraid of telling a few NIMBY’s (and it is a few, per the link to the Daily News) what to go do with themselves. And 19th Avenue in Astoria is almost completely industrial with a fair amount ...

Pure fantasy - Feel free to ignore, or move to a new topic if more appropriate: Was any thought given, in whole or in part, to the following combined scenarios: When the SAS/Q reaches 125th St have it turn right instead of left and head towards LGA. (Perhaps leave the SAS as planned heading west an...

It doesn't have to run all the way to Astoria. Jackson Heights-74 Street would make a good terminal. In fact, there's already an abandoned platform (8 cars long though) that was built by the IND for future Rockaway service still there. Agreed. Terminate the X line there and future-proof it to conti...

New York would do well to take a page out of the Washington D.C. Metro's book on how to intelligently connect major airports and the Downtown areas for the convenience of the riding public. Philadelphia and Chicago are also good examples of the right way to do it. SEPTA’s Airport Line in Philadelph...

The reason I favor sending the W from Whitehall to QBL/RBB and the R from Bay Ridge to Astoria is that by leaving the R on QBL and extending it onto the RBB, the R would become an even longer, less reliable service than it currently is (unless the R is truncated at Whitehall). The issue with the R n...

On the queens blvd subway, at the moment, no. But they're installing new signals so maybe in 10 years assuming it takes as long to get CBTC running as it did for the 7 line. They *could* divert one of the local lines through. Only three stops would lose a little local service. They could also bring...

Hi. I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I last posted on this board. Here goes... I believe the Rockaway Beach Branch should be restored as subway, not LIRR. The subway option, in spite of its outrageously high price tag (is that much palm-greasing really needed?) would benefit the communities ...

Read recently that since the rebuilding of the Culver Viaduct, there has been serious consideration to add express service to that line. As of now, the G runs local to Church Avenue, but it doesn't go to Manhattan. People who use the local stations would not want to lose a one seat ride to Manhatta...

I would say the 56 is also a no-brainer exactly as last operated but I'm wondering if running it out of Germantown also would be too much deadheading to be a viable option. Perhaps restore tracks at Allegheny Depot and restore tracks on 22nd between Erie and Allegheny and Allegheny between 22nd and...

I often "fantasize" about Philadelphia having an extensive subway system similar to New York City's, where no matter what part of the city you are in, a subway or elevated station is within close walking distance. It's a shame that will never happen...at least in our lifetime. I agree Tim...

With the proposed BRT/LRT along the Blvd, I think it's safe to assume that a Blvd subway will never happen. I guess we should all try to enjoy dreaming of transferring from a light rail car to the Broad Street Line at Erie. At least it's some type of transit in the Northeast. Agreed. If light rail ...

The "Cultural Corridor" route(s) would get very high ridership and be very popular with students and visitors. But I think it would get even better ridership if it were light rail instead of BRT. Yes, it would cost more to construct, but with trolley tracks at both ends of the proposed rou...
