The Main Line east of KO still stick rail, or CWR installed a long time ago? It is CWR all the way to Greenport. I do believe some of it may have been former stick rail as it dates back to the Forties through Yaphank. I dont know much about KO to Yaphank, but east of Yaphank, it is still stick rail...

JS-Good advance notice about a upcoming NYCT Nostalgia Special to Yankee Stadium on Opening Day... Why they did NOT use the term SUBWAY CARS to describe the vintage equipment is beyond me... I have grown to strongly dislike the awkward term "Train Cars" that is being unfortunately used mor...

JS - The first map that you posted is the first effort 1974 MTA Commuter Rail Map... This is an abstract design map only using a few primary colors to describe the routes listed: Medium Blue for the Long Island Rail Road Red for the New Haven Line(s) Light Blue for the Harlem Line Green for the Huds...

WE: Thank You for the reply...I think you mean 2030-2035 for future upgrades of the Main Line into Riverhead... I agree with you again about your observations... With the mention of the close proximity of the Main Line and the Montauk Branch in the Yaphank and South Haven (Park) vicinity I checked t...

Remark-- the article says the oldest cars in revenue service date to the 1980s. So (i) NYCTA seems to be working with a 35-40 year expected life span for its cars and (ii) (personal) NO car I rode when I last lived in New York City is still in service: hard to believe! Welcome to Railroad.net and t...

WE - Agree with all your observations about a relocated East Yaphank Station... From referring to my Hagstrom's Suffolk County Atlas I noticed that Mastic-Shirley Station is exactly 3 miles south on William Floyd Parkway (CR 46) from the proposed East Yaphank Station site... As we know there is avai...

NR: This instance that you remember is called a "lock-out" to prevent pass-back fare abuse... With a NY MTA Unlimited Metrocard the period is 18 minutes at the same station or on the same bus (route)... The MBTA likely uses something similar with its Charlie Cards or tickets... When this p...

None of the IRT cars thru the R36 were delivered with air-conditioning with the exception 10 R17 cars 6800-6809 (built in 1955) were delivered with experimental A/C. The A/C units failed and those cars were retrofitted with the standard axiflow fans. For years it was assumed it could not be done. B...

Dascalargo - Welcome to RR.Net and the MBTA Forum I was interested in MBTA transit fares myself - and as DG mentions you are correct about tokens being not in use in favor of regular US coins in T turnstiles and on vehicles... Everyone: Interesting discussion about Amtrak's decision to split seating 50/50 forwards and backwards... I would like to add that I prefer riding forward in a window seat on the left side if it is available - but I am flexible to riding backwards if no forward-facing seat can be found...As example ...
