Re: What's in Chillicothe?

The "empty yard" in the middle of town was the division point for the former B&O between Cincinnati and Parkersburg WV. (Ohio Division during Chessie days) as part of the Cumberland - St. Louis route. CSX began downgrading this line in the 1985-86 timeframe, and abandoned portions shor...

I would say that the Q500 series are more north-south than east-west trains out here. On the Toledo Sub (ex B&O from Toledo to Cincinnati) there are no 600 series Q trains that run on it. The true N-S Trains are all in the 500 series (506, 507 & 512 for example). Likewise on the Garrett/Will...

They're commonly used as "trimmers" at Stanley Yard near Toledo as well. The units for that assignment have had RCL equipment installed.

Between the end of double track Perry (Perrysburg) and Lima (I'm going to say DT&I Jct.) all the control points currently still have CPL's for their absolute signals. Those Control points are (from North to South) Perry (end of Double Track) N. End of Haskins (siding) S. End of Haskins (siding) ...

I figured that the NS had physically purchased it - guess not. Here's the STB decision for the Temperance to Vulcan portion. http://www.stb.dot.gov/decisions/readingroom.nsf/WEBUNID/2AAED3DE52C7CE7D852576C600639219?OpenDocument Note that the decision mentions working with TMACOG (Toledo Metro Area C...

The trackage in question is NS owned, CSX sold the backside from a point near Jackman Road to Gould tower to the NS 15 years or so ago. CSX retained ownership from that point over to Hallett tower to serve local industries (also used by Ann Arbor to access a portion of the former DT&I now known ...

Most of the reductions took place with the business downturns of the early 1980's. With the reduction of business, Chessie was able to consolidate all operations at Walbridge yard. Chessie also looked at taking a more drastic step, that being the abandonment of the B&O from north of Deshler to P...

There is some preliminary funding for improved access to I-75 for the National Gateway site approved in the ODOT TRAC listing http://www.dot.state.oh.us/trac/Documents/2010%20Draft%20TRAC%20List%20%28March%2024,%202010%29%20with%20Signature.pdf 2 million $ is probably enough to do do study work and ...

Not surprising, the city of Toledo & the University of Toledo has wanted those tracks out for years. The backside's usefulness ended when the upper river bridge was damaged in a derailment back in the early 1980's and never rebuilt. Add to it that with the Conrail split, the NS (the last user of...

Saw one working Walbridge yard (former C&O yard just outside of Toledo OH) earlier this week switching a cut of auto racks. They occasionally serve as power for locals and yard jobs up here in Toledo, but former L&N, SBD and Conrail GP38-2's are much more frequent for those assignments.

Here's some additional speculation to go along with. I'm guessing that the entire Columbus-Toledo route was treated as one line segment. CSX wasn't about to give up access to Honda (via the Scottslawn Secondary) and took the "rest" of the line from Ridgeway north as kind of a "throw i...

Not surprised in some respects, to me the communication amongst dispatchers was much more crucial - because those decisions and communications happen every day. than the "need" to physically see the territory (do air traffic controlers fly their territory?) too bad that portion of things h...

Work has slowed down for the winter (not surprisingly) all the new interlockings have been active for several months now. the leads are almost complete (only about 100' of trackage near the Range Line road grade crossing remained to be completed on my last visit down there during the holidays) "...

Dispatchers for the Louisville Division have been operating out of a new facility in Cincinnati for the last several months. I would also suspect that a factor in the original decision to locate all dispatchers in Jacksonville in the first place was that it was the "best bang for the buck"...

As an aside, while the B&O today does serve as the western end of CSX's Chicago-East mainline, a large portion of it had been single tracked by B&O/Chessie/CSX starting in the 1960's. Prior to the Conrail split, CSX re-installed all the 'missing' double track (and even added a 3rd main aroun...
