Re: Reason(s) for Demise of ALCO

Thanks guys for all the great info. I don't have much to add, but the comment on the Rhodesian Railways DE2 class made me look at our own NZR Df class from 1954. They were very similar and rather unsuccessful. An additional order for 21 of the 1500hp double engined and double ended units from Englis...

Can't mistake a C-430. Check out this link, scroll down a bit to find the photo of 433 on type "B" trucks.

Re: Current M&E Roster

Hi I'm probably not quite up to date myself, but from 12,000 miles away, I'll try to answer. Only one of the B&A Geeps has been painted and put in service, #23 is at Bayway. Judging by the oil stains visible on the hood in a couple of photos, all is not well with the 23. Maybe this is what prompted ...

Re: Alco Century 430s

It was interesting seeing a photo of freshly painted 433 sitting outside the Lakeville engine house, on type "B" trucks.

Re: Alco Export Locomotives

Thanks for the great info. I met a guy at the Christchurch Trainshow last year who has access to the NZR archives, and he is keeping an eye out for Alco tender documents for me. A DL-531 would have been a better option than the Dj class, and would likely still be with us in reasonable numbers. Cheer...

Re: Alco Export Locomotives

Great info. Thanks. I've been looking for information on any tenders Alco may have prepared for potential sale to New Zealand Railways. NZR started buying large numbers of G-12s in 1955. Being an Alco fan I'd like to know what an alternative history may have looked like. I model N-scale and would li...

Re: Alco PB-1 still out there

Thanks for the comprehensive answer Tom. I must go through my old Super-8 movie footage. In October 1980 I shot the Zephyr westbound out of Grandby, I wonder if the SGC was in the consist that day.

Alco PB-1 still out there

Hi I was very surprised to see this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/77007562@N03/30919744421 As soon as I saw the profile I had to look further. A quick search and a huge surprise. This is an ex-D&RGW PB-1 that was turned into a steam generator car. Ignore the EMD trucks and the GE fuel tank, this is...

Re: Best places to (legally) railfan the M&E

Hi
One of the best viewing spots is the Staples parking lot which overlooks the M&E shops off Abbett Ave. There are also good locations in Wharton, West Dewey Ave near Lake Jct, and also through Dover and Rockaway. The trick is knowing when the M&E is running.

Re: Introducing WNYP Alco RS3m 406.

That box contains the dynamic brakes, or it did when rebuilt years ago. The D&H RS-3's had their dynamic brakes in the short hood, so they had to be relocated when the short hoods were chopped during the MK rebuilding.

Re: Current M&E Roster

I can't really answer your question Steve, but I can repeat what I have read and heard elsewhere that is public knowledge. Also, check out the M&E's press release from November last year. I can't find it now, but I think it referred to using the power to support or expand the existing services. The ...
