Re: Somerset Coal Trains Done For Good?

This would have made for a dandy excursion line, with no other traffic to deal with. Perhaps... if there was no competition. There are at least half a dozen excursion operations within a 2 or 3 hour drive... including excursions on the Falls Road at Lockport. What would entice passengers away from ...

The former Erie RR/EL required helpers on longer and heavier trains going eastbound at Attica Hill. This practice continued into the mid 80s under Conrail ownership. NS still under powers their eastbound trains on occasion- a train had to double the grade recently.

NS has cleared and repaired the tracks in East Palestine, OH... so the detours have ended.

Re: Status of Milliken Power Plant, Cargill Salt, Cayuga Lake

Very interesting. My questions: 1. When was it abandoned and torn up? (maybe in different years?) 2. When was it reactivated with the new rail for the power plant? 3. Regarding the income from the lakeside camps, did the LV have a choice regarding reactivating? Or was the law such that if there was...

There are no customers in Ithaca at this time. Ithaca Central currently has 2 customers- Cargill and ADS. The latter is just north of Broad St Extension in Waverly.

In memory of Warren Edsall

Former B&H conductor Warren Edsall passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. His nephew was a classmate in Hammondsport, so Warren recognized me when I started shooting digitally in in 2007. Warren was always friendly and helpful. He left the RR circa 2012. The last time I saw Warren ...

Those maps are like crack. as BR&P said, i got addicted ot looking at them. the former Erie RR ROW is of particular interest to me since I enjoy dining at TOn Ds and Mythology/Kaino's on occasion. Both restaurants sit where the Erie?EL used to be.

I think you mean Erie ROW, correct? I don't recall DL&W having track in the Tonawanda area.

The Ohio St local also works ADM and the silos next to Ohio St on the other side of the river. The yard was definitely used for all of that traffic (plus General Mills). As I recall, the yard was used occasionally for storing excess cars, too. It's sad to see how much traffic has fallen on both Clas...

From what I've heard, it sounds like CSX is closing Ohio St Yard and moving the local based there to either Frontier or Niagara Falls. Yard tracks will be removed.... but the tracks to ADM and General Mills will remain in place to service those customers.

This would have made for a dandy excursion line, with no other traffic to deal with. In theory, yes. In reality, there are already 7 excursions within a two hour radius of Lockport: 1. Medina RR Museum 2. Buffalo Cattaraugus & Jamestown Scenic Railway 3. New York & Lake Erie RR 4. Arcade &a...

In a related thought, I'm guessing PRR wanted their own engine servicing facility near Rochester... which would also dictate the need for turntable in the steam era

But this leads to a question... why build a turntable here in the first place? Would it not be possible to use the NYC/PRR interchange tracks at Genesee Junction as a wye? Why couldn't you turn the engines that way? Using the wye would have required cooperation between 2 railroads that were traditi...

I looked at the aerial view of Ray on Bing Maps. There is cluster of buildings next to the DL&W ROW at Hickox Rd. Perhaps there was a feed mill or fertilizer dealer there back in the the DL&W/early EL era? In a weird coincidence, a weak tornado hit Alexander two night ago and the damage trac...

The combine went south (Maryland?) after the B&H management changed hands in the late 70s.
