In MAW days the largest customer in Liberty Center was the elevator. They opted to build a facility in Hamler. ND&W ran to LC occasionally to serve a transload customer. I believe the commodity was firebrick carried in gondolas, either coming from or going to the steel mill in Delta. In the last...

Over the summer they laid three new tracks in the yard at Defiance. Derailments still happen, but overall the property is in much better shape now than at acquisition. A few weeks ago they added a GP20u, still in Santa Fe blue/yellow colors. Not sure if this is additional power, or a replacement for...

I haven't been to Ithaca in a long time, so I can't verify this first hand, but one of the rail blogs out this way noted that the project is moving forward, with new rail being laid into and around the complex.

An update to the below post. The sand business has returned for GLC, as the facility in Yuma re-opened a month or so ago. East Jordan Iron Works is building a new gas fired foundry, which will mean an end to some of their trans-loaded coke traffic at Cadillac.

The current iteration of the Watco owned Ann Arbor RR operates from its namesake city south to Toledo, where the majority of its customers are located. Online business between AA and Toledo is limited. Interchange with Great Lakes Central takes place at a siding just north of AA named Osmer. GLC ope...

Main interchange point is with the Ann Arbor RR at a siding called Osmer, which is just north of the namesake city. GLC also interchanges with CN and LSRC in Durand, CSX in Ann Pere (Howell), Mid-Michigan in Alma, and through the AA, NS in Toledo. As for customers, they operate a lot of state owned ...

" I don't enjoy railfanning in 25 degree weather" +1 to that. Personally, I wouldn't spend the night, car or otherwise. There is drug dealing activity in the nearby neighborhoods, so the police might assume you are parked there to buy, or to use, or...We have been there after dark plenty o...

I live about 25 miles from Fostoria, close enough to drive there whenever the mood strikes. In all my trips I've never seen anyone tenting it at the park. I strongly suspect this practice would be discouraged if not outright prohibited in Fostoria. Also, I'm guessing that the neighborhood where you ...

Notice of discontinuance filed for the White Pine Sub, to take effect January 2. There are a couple of proposed copper mine projects in the area which could result in future need for and use of the line, so CN stopped short of filing for outright abandonment. Actually the STB petitioner is listed as...

Toledo always celebrates NTD one week early, the Saturday prior to the real date. I've gone every year, including to yesterday's event, and while somewhat lame the first year, the amount of equipment on display, the exhibits, as well as the number of attendees, have all grown each year. Yesterday th...

There were rumors that 1280 would be saved/donated to said museum. That didn't happen, and 1280 and the others were sold to Waymore Power of Piasa, IL. 1280 was scrapped by Waymore, a company that specializes in Alco parts and service, in Saginaw, MI on November 17, 2011. The museum did end up acqui...
