The only other area to watch out for is the site of the new (just funded!) station area slated to go in place of the mostly derelict P&W Receiving Yard (Golf Ave./Pine St. to Conant St. block). Nothing interesting to see there; Receiving Yard has been reduced to a block-wide slab of bare concre...

About 3 years ago, a management source at HDI told me that they hadn't used the spur in "15 or 20 years" and that it was last used for outbound glass and aluminum.

I echo those observations. A lot of amazing photographs, from rare vantage points. However, very confusing layout and while I realize this is Vol 1 and a Vol 2 is planned, I just found it odd that this volume was supposed to reference the "prosperous" era, and while presumptuously Vol 2 wi...

I think "great shape" might be a relative term when referring to Old Saybrook to Essex......
Regardless, Amtrak removed the old lumber company siding switch from the east leg of the wye last week. It's straight railed now.

I used to spend a lot of time in that area during that time frame. Would love to see more if you have others. Thanks for sharing.

PC and Conrail ran coal down as far at the power plant in Maromas from Middletown until the mid 80s. Just another minor clarification, the coal trains were long gone prior to the mid-1980s and even prior to the formation of Conrail if I'm correct. Best I recall is them ending during the PC era, wit...

when did those come down? i don't remember seeing them as a kid Last use of the South Amboy dumpers was right around the early Penn Central era, 1969 or thereabouts. I'm not sure if both were in service right until the end. They were scrapped sometime during the early 1980s. I recall the thawing sh...

Very interesting, never would have guessed it went to CR. Just as curious, I find it noteworthy that CR managed to obliterate the line (there was a lot of fill in those embankments), apparently without having gone thru formal abandonment proceedings (as summarized in the quote below). Thanks for pos...

Hi Bob, I have oft wondered if this stretch of trackage was even conveyed to Conrail on 04/01/76. Maybe somebody else will chime in, but something tells me this trackage was disposed of by the LV Estate following C-day. I recall walking the portion of this trackage between Communipaw Avenue and Gran...

Well, folks, I guess this site is a good home for those who would like to discuss what became of the New Haven post Dec. 31 1968. I have noticed a lot of names here that I have long known and respected. I was going to post something on that other site regarding how I used to enjoy "The New Hav...

I think we all should shut up and and sit down and listen to BiggAW. He does seem to have all the answers and all the knowledge--- much more than the rest of us lowly peasants. maybe running some low-grade steam You ever try carrying a bucket of "low-grade steam"? It's real heavy. I had to carry one from the pit track to the shop once. Almost slipped on a puddle of "no oil", the stuff you're supposed to use to oil the oxygen gauge on the oxy-acetylene ...

Just before the turnpike it also appears as though there was a substancial yard that ran N-S and wye'd with the E-W Broad St branch. Now just a handful of tracks in the woods. Sounds like you're referring to the former CNJ Brills Yard. The west side of Brills Yard is the site of what was once Napor...
