Metro-North lowered the top speed on the New Haven and Hudson lines from 90 to 80 because of inspections that were required to maintain level 5 certification were not justified by the very small time savings. The only 90 mph on the New Haven Line was from New Rochelle to Harrison and the time saving...

In 1978 when I gave up the Road Foreman's job at NWP, I took the engineer's job on WP-1, the local freight out of NWP. Fordham yard was still there at that time and we would go in the clear there for lunch from time to time. There was an Italian deli on Webster Ave that had fantastic veal parm heros...

The Metropolitan Lounge at Portland Union Station is decent. I arrived in a roomette on the Coast Starlight and was permitted access even though I was waiting for a northbound Cascades train. Seating was comfortable but there was no wifi. Unfortunately, King Street Station in Seattle lacks a similar...

I have to agree with Noel. The view of the city from Hellgate Bridge is spectacular. The Sydney Harbor bridge, which is of similar design, has a famous bridge walk where tourists can climb to the top of the arch for a substantial fee. For a more modest cost, you can climb one of the pylons. It would...

Although the lower level loop has been out of service for many years, track 200 is still in service and was being used frequently when I was still working at Metro-North 10 years ago. There is a platform on the west side of track 200 that is adjacent to the B&B shops that makes the track easily ...

This tragedy happened near me in Florida yesterday. There has been no reason given why the babysitter and her boyfriend were on the tracks with the 2 year old boy and his 4 year old sister. In my career, I had three accidents where suicide jumpers used my trains as their means of destruction. Two we...

I have a question regarding the Portland section of the Builder. Where do they turn the engine, or the entire consist? Looking at a map in this month's issue of Trains, it looks like there is a wye on the other side of the river. I just wondered what the normal move would be in Portland.

Very short trip report from June 11 on the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Portland and return on Coaster. I had accumulated points with an Amtrak credit card and redeemed them for a roomette so I could enjoy a ride in the Pacific Parlor car. The wifi was very weak but I was able to connect to Faceb...

Better late than never a trip report from June 12 from Seattle to Chicago. My national map was missing much of the northwest and this trip was going to cover that. On the previous day, I had made a trip down to Portland on the Coast Starlight to cross Oregon off my bucket list but that would be off ...

One year later in the fall of 1963, I rode the Milwaukee Road and I remember it was fast, scenic and very rough. I walked through the train at the time and the whole train was rough riding. Noel Weaver I rode the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago in June and we were an hour late at MSP due to ...

PC: Just curious: Which side of the Cascade Tunnel was the Builder stopped on? This was on the west side of the Cascade Tunnel. We were heading east and both the freights were westbound. The one that passed us on the siding was a stack train while the one on the main was a mixed consist. I know tha...

I took the Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago on June 13 and we made a weird move at the Cascade Tunnel. After stopping on the main, we were passed by a freight on the siding. After the freight passed, we reversed direction, then proceeded east through the siding, with another freight passing us...

I read that there was a washout at Whaley Lake and that a concrete block was placed on the track to block access. Does anyone know if that was ever repaired or is the track still bisected between Holmes and Hopewell Jct.?
