Ouch! If underwater cables were damaged, that IS going to take some time!
...couldn't find any other posts on this. Amtrak and NJT service suspended for a while today due to "signal issues at the Portal Bridge". There are still delays tonight. I'm curious here... what possible "signal issues" could there be here that are taking upwards of 12, 18 or mor...
...7 hours is ridiculous. The reports said that the train lost all power... but in the end, another Acela coupled to it and towed it to NYP; so it wasn't a catenary power issue. Passengers on the stricken train said that the "screeching" noises made while being towed were terrible. There w...
...don't have much detail, but apparently a NJT locomotive caught fire while stopped at the Spring Lake station around noon today. Heavy smoke, FD dumped a lot of water on the engine. A friend of mine saw it. He has cell phone pictures; if I can transfer them, I will post them.
...when I go to the video link at shorenewsnetwork, all I get is a still image.. no way to start or play video. Am I missing something? I'm trying to get my head around exactly where this happened. I know that there have been track changes at Wood since I was through there on a daily basis.... MANY ...
...Is NJT moving any equipment out of low-lying areas prior to the arrival of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Isaias? From Bay Head or the Meadowlands Maintenance Facility? The night before Sandy, they ran two groups of almost 5 trainsets coupled head to tail out of Bay Head.

If the rail broke under train, it would not trip any signal....and if the break occurred exactly at an insulated joint between signal block sections, there is the possibility that the signal system might not detect it.
My experience has been, and yes, it varies based on the specific railroad and equipment; that there is a light on each car that indicates whether the brakes are applied/released and whether the doors are open/closed on that particular car.
Concerning signal power, the 91.667Hz frequency was specifically chosen so that the frequency and its' harmonics ( 2x, 3x, 4x, etc; of the original frequency) would be as far removed from the 25Hz traction power and 60Hz commercial power and those harmonics. The signal department track relays that w...
A little historical perspective: While today the NEC is "Amtrak" and the NJCL is "New Jersey Transit", from a signaling standpoint these lines started out as the "PRR" and "Central Railroad of New Jersey" (CNJ), or the Jersey Central. All of the NEC and what t...
