Re: Grand Junction Branch (The North/South Side Connection)

Looking at Street View, there's easily room for 2 tracks under the building. I think light rail would be an excellent use of the corridor; not only can it tie into the Green Line near BET, but it could be part of a light-rail Urban Ring that goes up through Chelsea.

Re: Grand Junction Branch (The North/South Side Connection)

That sounds like the remains of the old Eastern Railroad mainline, which runs down the west side of East Boston along the Chelsea River. There was a plan a few years ago to reactivate it for an ethanol transshipment operation, but it got wisely shot down over environmental concerns.

PAR action in Charlestown

A couple of interesting things I saw from the Sullivan inbound platform this morning, around 8:45. First was PAR heading outbound with some covered hoppers and a few tankers of hydrochloric acid, behind an engine (didn't see it closely) that was spewing so much smoke I couldn't actually see whether ...

Re: North-South Rail Link Discussion

After we spent fourteen billon dollars to get rid of an elevated structure through the middle of the city, you want to build another one? Good luck with that.

Re: North-South Rail Link Discussion

Someone suggests something like this about every other month in this thread. :-) The entire point of NSRL is to unify the northside and southside commuter rail systems. A trolley down the Greenway isn't going to do that.

Re: Green Line Expansion Beyond Lechmere

OK, people. Talk of eliminating the Minuteman Bikeway in order to build a light- or heavy-rail transit line is a complete non-starter. The railroad was single-tracked all the way through and I'm far from convinced there's room for two tracks, never mind two tracks and a trail, for any significant pa...

Re: Better Transit to/from Downtown and Logan + At Logon

I'm still holding out for an aerial gondola that makes a one-directional loop, with stations at Airport, Terminals E, C, B/A and the rental car center and back to Airport. I've no idea if such a thing would have the necessary capacity, but it would be really cool.

Re: Grand Junction Branch (The North/South Side Connection)

Fundamentally, rebuilding the Grand Junction for mainline passenger rail is a terrible idea. It's a really roundabout route with half a dozen closely-spaced grade crossings on busy streets. Rebuilding that stretch of the Pike to allow for an eastbound connection will be expensive and disruptive enou...

Re: Grand Junction Branch (The North/South Side Connection)

Go look at Google Maps (here) and tell me how you're going to build an eastbound connection from the Grand Junction to the B&A mainline.

Re: North-South Rail Link Discussion

For a while I had one employee taking Commuter Rail/Orange Line between Malden and West Roxbury, but if he couldn't travel in rush hour, he usually worked from home rather than suffer through sparse CR mid-day and evening schedules. The stubbornest employee I ever had rode an express bus in from Wa...

Re: Rte 1 Peabody crossing

I'm hoping that someday they come up with the money to put a bridge across Rte 1 in that location to connect the bike paths. Between the Danvers Rail Trail and the one they're building from Wakefield to Lynnfield, conceivably you could end up with a multi-use path from Wakefield to Newburyport and/o...

Re: GLX Impact on NH Route (Lowell Line)

They've well and thoroughly gutted the Homans building in Gilman Square and it's supposed to be demolished by year's end, if I recall correctly. The former garage and bowling alley in Ball Square are being remediated now (probably all kinds of horrible stuff from the garage) and are supposed to come...

Re: GLX Impact on NH Route (Lowell Line)

Which site? If it's Gilman Square, remember that they're rebuilding Somerville High School on the hill directly behind it, and some of that might look like GLX work.
