Re: Amtrak Empire Service (New York State)

What would help a ton is if business class had assigned seating like an airplane, and business/coach class cars had markings on the platform for where to line up, so you could just walk out to the platform area near your car/section. It would help a ton with managing crowds and not only for Empire S...

My understanding is that any increase in movements on Grand Junction will cause a huge fouling of traffic on all the at-grade crossings in downtown Cambridge, putting a large non-monetary cost on that routing. The other side of a Worcester-Ayer routing is that, there's a large amount of suburban spr...

New Haven would probably work better operationally for that option, however either choice affects the Connecticut draw bridge slots. It's worth noting the benefits to the west Boston suburbs of a train running west out of Boston and then south from Worcester towards New London (and not Providence)....

I was in San Jose last year around dinner time, and found myself walking blocks in every direction looking for a bite to eat, but except dive bars. Did I miss something? New London has a fair amount of decent food in the area. Captain Scott's Lobster Dock is where we went last we were in town, and o...

One of NNEPRA's Strategic Goals & Initiatives is to relocate the Portland Train Station from its current location on the Mountain Branch (Portland Transportation Center) to the Mainline. Additional details at http://www.trainridersne.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ...

What would happen if Prince Andrew did add rail to the TZB, and 87/287. One of the less expensive options (if there is such a thing in NYS). And then decided to stop subsidizing/paying NJT for service to Hoboken? Leave it as a transfer station, a "Union Station" so to speak. Jaap, what wo...

Why not name all the offending railroads, not just NS? In the PDF posted above by bostontrainguy, Amtrak states that, "among the six Class I freight host railroads, Norfolk Southern is ranked last in performance – and in 2018 was responsible for 30% more delays than even the next-to-last host ...

Most Japanese suburban railroads have a special "Green Car" first-class car or two with reservation-only seats. I believe some of them have onboard food & drink service like the shinkansen, but the main differentiation is the fact that you're guaranteed a seat, as many regional rail tr...

Just spitballing here, but what if Glassboro, PATCO Speedline, and Atlantic City lines were all under the same management/dispatching? I don't mean to head into crazy transit pitching territory, but there's still ROW to Mt. Holly, Salem, and Vineland, so couldn't a more robust network be built in th...

"Under the umbrella of a single agency" is a nice dream. But merge MNRR and LIRR? Isn't there too much resistance in each organization to ever cooperate? Realistically speaking, what would need to change in the bureaucracy to make that happen?

Re: Crazy proposal: SLE to Mohegan sun

My understanding is that Mohegan Sun, when it was first built, was designed with room for a station stop along the tracks to provide possible rail service from New London - but that's on the west side of the Thames. Using the P&W on the eastern side is impossible for casino purposes without buil...
