Re: Acela II (Alstom Avelia Liberty): Design, Production, Delivery, Acceptance

It's been quiet on the Avelia's, for those of us unfamiliar with the new engine qualification process what are the next steps post model validation? Is it just a qualification of the equipment and crews? In aviation I'm used to seeing a type cert for airworthiness one for the FAA and one for the Mil...

Re: SEPTA NPT card will be "SEPTA Key"?

If you go look at the retail locators for outbound train stops on regional rail, they are almost all the train station. Those train stations are from Overbrook to Paoli with the exception of I think Bryn Mawr have hours of 5:30 am to 11:15 am M-F. At other stations they are making motions towards sh...

You can buy Key at retailers too, and it's a one-time issue, even for the occasional rider. Plus the onboard charge is much cheaper than anything LIRR or NJT charges. About that, I didn't remember that you could buy them at retailers, especially when there are no retailers along the Paoli local, it...

Apologies, I meant to put in my earlier post to pull sets from SEPTA/MARC for NE Regional's and repurpose the NE Regional's for Acela's schedule as STrRedWolf was pointing out. From what I remember Acela is able to run as fast because it has less stops, it only really uses its 150 mph legs in a coup...

This is what I was trying to bring up in the other thread, could Amtrak lease the cars from MARC and ACS-64 Locos from SEPTA? SEPTA is only operation at I think 75% capacity and could reallocate resources if needed. I know the gearing is different, but Amtrak is in that bad of a pinch it could work....

I guess this is as good of a thread as any to post this, but does anyone know what's going wrong with the NE Corridor today? SEPTA reports it as a "Radio Failure" with service suspended on all Amtrak lines, NJ Transit reports it as a "Service Disruption" with delays into and out ...

Back when the Key^tm was coming online, I asked specifically to one of the representatives that was touting the machine to me at 30th Street about outbound deployment and they stated there was no intention of deploying key machines at outlying stations. Something about it costing 10,000 dollars per ...

I think an issue that we have here is the matrix of threat to impact. Even if a nefarious group was to hijack a train...where would they go? They could only really seize the cab and at worst go a couple of miles. Electrics have no fuel to use as a weapon like an airliner on the NE corridor, and the ...

For once I have a tiny bit of experience dealing with certain issues that you are bringing up there. Even if Amtrak was to say make a contract to maintain that equipment, it's probably obsolete. Working at a aerospace facility, we are having trouble with some aircraft part supplies as the government...

I'm not sure if this belongs in this thread as it may derail it, but is there even a plan B on the table if the current fleet of Acela's gives out? There's only so much cannibalization that is possible. Would there lets say in a pretend world be an option for Amtrak to lease SEPTA/MARC equipment (gi...

On the RRD Division, safety has been pretty good. I do wish that they would run more trains. On the transit division, I've had to take the bus back home multiple times because the R5 doesn't run frequent enough and the current iteration of bus drivers seem to be very green. Like, driving the bus lik...

Overall having to travel on the NEC hasn't been great. I know of the track work issues, but there was a Acela train I was on that got routed behind a local NE Regional train from New Rochelle all the way out to Boston which made me very grumpy enough to complain to Amtrak to on my survey. I did ask ...

Eh, I don't think that the MTOW will be that much of an impact. Jet engine operating temperatures and the density of air issue can be mitigated by less payload so its not *critical*. The bigger thing will be the cost of fuel increase from refineries slowing down (which is more influenced by the Saud...

Tomorrow the Governor has announced that they are reopening I-95 at 12 pm tomorrow. As stated earlier in the thread the plan is to temporarily fill the hole, then build a bridge around the the fill, then dig out the fill, the build the rest of the bridge. The actual fix will still take months, but 6...
