Re: Would GEVO engine be ideal in a passenger locomotive?

I understand that MPI/GE tried to bid a high speed passenger unit (which would've been powered by a T4 GEVO engine) on the multi-state contract that Siemens won a few years ago. Unfortunately I don't know much else about the technical details of this unbuilt model. MPI/GE also suggested that they co...

The laws regarding photography in public are pretty much the same as those in the US. Doesn't mean people won't react in weird ways. I got a couple of odd reactions around the Toronto Junction yesterday.

What in particular were you hoping to see? Passenger trains? Freights?

The Red Line does (partly) run under private property between Tenleytown and Van Ness. In fact, during the construction of that segment, two houses were torn down so that the properties could be turned into emergency exits from the tunnel.

I saw this article arguing against selecting CRRC for the 8K contract. CRRC probably will submit a bid, and they are known to undercut their competitors when it comes to price, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. https://www.bizjournals.com/washington/news/2018/12/10/viewpoint-chine...

I thought I remembered hearing that 1000-1001, 4000-4001, and 5000-5001 were all being kept at Greenbelt Yard. I did see a photo on Facebook earlier this year showing 1000-1001 with the end cowls painted in primer.

The live footage from the engine was nice, but I've got to say, there were several close calls (with people moving back from the tracks with only seconds to spare). The crew must've been on the edge of their seats for the entire run (although thankfully, nobody was hit). It would have been awful if ...

Transport Canada would be silly not to, but I suspect VIA will go with more conventional equipment (i.e. SC-44s and Single Level cars).

For those who haven't heard, Siemens is apparently the preferred bidder at this time. We will have to wait for an official release however, before more details come out.

1) It's not a vacuum. Its basically a 99% vacuum, so if it fails, it'll be very similar to an actual vacuum failure. So when he's talking Hyperloop, people listen. Let's face it, when Musk released his white paper, there were a lot of people who said it would never work and that we'd never see anyt...

Any updates on the purchase of “new” motive power? XC According to the Altoona Works Facebook page, former MEC 614 and 615 are being rebuilt at the Juniata shops for the W&W. These are SD45-2s that were repowered with 16 cylinder engines. https://www.facebook.com/altoonaworks/photos/a.101565460...

GE Battery Powered Locomotive

GE and BNSF are apparently partnering to develop and test a battery powered locomotive based on the Evolution Series platform. This will be interesting... http://trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2018/10/12-ge-to-build-battery-powered-locomotive-for-bnsf-use-in-california" onclick="window.open...

Yes, 5 of the 6 GP39s are still used in revenue service (they were supposed to be re-powered, but that never happened). When they run solo, they usually pull only 3 to 4 cars. 68 still has its HEP generator, so it can pull revenue trains as well. Any idea which is no longer used, and is it availabl...

Hyperloop is just maglev in a vacuum tube... It's just taking an astronomically expensive existing technology and putting it in even more expensive tubes. Is there any barrier to it? Just economics... You're right, the economics don't make much sense. I would say there are also physical barriers. N...

In 2023, when Metro expects to receive the 8000 series cars, the 6000 series will reach mid-life. At this time Metro will have to make a decision about what to with the 6000 series cars: 1) Do the mid-life overhaul as planned which will make them compatible with the 7000 series 2) Retire them early...

I saw that the 5 ex CN BBD HR616s were no longer visible at NRE in Silvis, Illinois (based on the drone video below). They had been sitting around for over 15 years and were in rough shape, leading me to believe they met the torch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkNcaaXE3ms" onclick="wind...
