https://i.imgur.com/aydnAp8.png Route length traveled isn't everything. Joe Biden clocked much of his 2 million miles on Amtrak on the same WAS-WIL segment. My map is short but well traveled + tens of thousands of miles on LIRR over the years. Also if anyone's interested in tracking all types of th...

Off topic: I have just learned, from NPR, the Coronavirus stimulus legislation (now passed both Houses, enroute to the President) is formally titled Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act of 2020, or CARES20. Addendum: signed Not off-topic at all. The bill has a sizeable bailout for pas...

The fence in question is decently robust - steel post fencing with jagged anti-climbing edges at the top of each post.Additionally there are warning signs in both Spanish and English.

It's not Amtrak's fault when the near entirety of Inwood Hill Park has a fully accessible waterfront.

Funny thing is a few years back when New Jersey was trying to get New York to help fund that tunnel, Cuomo balked saying "It's not my tunnel". His position was it was New Jersey's problem to solve, or maybe it was because NJ had a Republican governor at the time? So he's changed his tune ...

“I think part of the problem we’re dealing with is the original mandate from Congress, which said that this is supposed to be run as a for-profit corporation,” Mr. DeFazio said. “I think they should think about efficiency but not profit…Amtrak is a service, and it can be a better service.”..Amtrak’...

NY Gov. Cuomo just called for a review of past studies about NY HSR and for a new study about NY HSR to be done. I’m not sure of the point of simply preparing a study, but there is some push for faster trains upstate I would wager it's a shovel ready contingency to be well placed in the case of Bid...

According to House T&I Chairman DeFazio, he intends to strip Amtrak's for profit mandate in the Surface Transportation re-authorization that will supersede the current 2015 FAST act due to expire in 2020.

It seems that the freight railroads, with their impercise and unscheduled railroading, are doing more to drive away any freight customers than any passenger trains could ever do. I think CSX, in particular, is getting ready to wrap things up and sell what's left of the railroad to government agenci...

Say I live in Oyster Bay (or anywhere in Long Island), and I have to go to Boston or Washington. A low cost option of convoluted transfers and dual modes wouldn't be of much utility. The FRA's NEC Future program investigated improving NEC service for Long Island. Their conclusion was that the best ...

As it very well should, a very large percentage of Metro North's ~300,000 ridership figure is from Connecticut. Subtract the Connecticut ridership and the funding is comparable.

Also, they could build directly above Sunnyside Yards, much like what is being done at Hudson Yards. HQ2-LIC isn't going to be built over Sunnyside yards. The Amazon blog announcement has a map showing their new HQ2 on Vernon Blvd - between the LIC ferry dock and the 23rd St Ely Ave subway station....

But the best hope is that appropriation legislation starts in the House - and come January, there will be a new Sheriff and Deputies in town. I'm particularly optimistic about the new chair of the House Transportation Committee. Quite an improvement from the Mica era. https://i.imgur.com/6bmf8Ml.jpg
