Re: Union Station Retail Redo Planned In New Haven

Thanks for posting this. I avoid Union Station like the plague. If I'm going to Boston, I get the train to the east, usually Old Saybrook. If NY or south, I drive to Milford station. The coffee shop on the lower level is impenetrable with more then two people in line with luggage. I have been using ...

This website has some roster information. I'm not sure how current it is, though.

Re: Best day/time to see power at Cedar Hill

There are some rough times on this RR radio page. Look for CT Southern CSO-1. There are some CSX and Providence and Worcester, although the latter don't seem to have a set schedule. Many freights run when Amtrak or CTRail aren't around to bother them (night). Similar to the Shoreline run east of New...

Re: Best day/time to see power at Cedar Hill

Do you mean Cedar Hill yard in New Haven, Hamden and North Haven, CT? If so, there is usually CSX power at the northern end of,the yard, visible in North Haven at the PC Richards parking lot, or from the flyover bridge. At that point, the main line (Amtrak) is on the western edge of the swamp. The A...

Re: What happened to the mail contracts?

A friend from Ossining, NY, had his new EZ-Pass transponder delivered to his post office a couple years ago while he and his wife were at their condo in South Florida, Atlantic Coast. The Ossining P.O. forwarded it to Florida. When he got his next statement, he was charged for every EZ-Pass toll bo...

I believe this one is called Cedar by the dispatchers. I can look up the MP when I get a chance.

Re: National Railroading Safety (Amtrak & Host Railroads)

I re-read this thread all,the way through trying to understand where Blended attacked Mr. Weaver, to no avail. The "counter attacks" against BB looked like a diversion at first, but I think more likely a product of past encounters. On its independent merits, the original statements are well worthy o...

Re: Coupling in motion?

If the trains were only coupled mechanically, how would a control station know to initiate emergency braking? What the OP describes sounds similar to the Crazy 8's incident in 2001, which the movie Unstoppable was based on.

I was at the new Wallingford station today, and noticed that on track 2 they have installed a set of switches and a parallel track bringing the trains stopping there (?Northbound side only) closer by about 18 inches.

Re: How did you become a fan?

My family moved from the countryside in southern CT, USA, to Hamden, within a few blocks of the Cedar Hill yard. The first night there in 1960, I heard train horns all night long, so as soon as I could, I rode my bike there one night and watched . . . and listened. I had also been exposed to freight...

Thanks, shadyjay. I moved to NoH in 1989, and had heard there was a station there, but I never saw the platforms. Now the mystery is solved!

When did trains stoop at North Haven? Did they just stop at Devine St? Was there ever a station? I tried search, but "new haven" swamped the results.
