Contact: 609-882-3148The Hunterdon County Division of Parks and Recreation will host "...there used to be a railroad" on Friday, March 20. One of a series of presentations highlighting the evolution of the Garden State as told through historic aerial photography. The show runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There is a...
UMTRR - I did present "...tu2barr" at the 4-H Center for the NEFF-RPM the last two years, and have added more aerial photography and stories since. Glad you enjoyed!
I'll take a "rail-trail" advocate over a "return it to the adjacent landowners" advocate any day of the week. At least the rail-trail people can help keep a linear right-of-way intact for future use. The "adjacent landowners" just want a place to put the lawnmower shed...
Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! I don't know if the portrait is of an actual engine or is a fantasy - the theme certainly is a hopeful one: the portrait is entitled "Spirit of the Water Gap." It was commissioned for Mr. Runte's Book (see my post, above). I am not getting any...
No one makes many friends by seeing the world as us versus them. As someone who worked in the 'environmental' field for 35 years I truly love the outdoors and the good earth - but more to the point so did those 'working' railroads. I highly recommend reading Alfred Runte's " Allies of the Earth...
Here's a portion of a C. C. Vermeule topographic manuscript map circa 1870-1887 from the New Jersey Geological Survey, that shows the wye. These maps are at: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/njgs/enviroe ... lemaps.htm
Hey Oport - Looking at the 1901 topo and a more recent one, I guestimate the wye tracks diverged from the NY&LB at points east and west of and almost equidistant from Horseneck Point Road. The land on the west side of the tracks along Parkers Creek appears to have been filled, so its probably no...
Here is a 1901 map showing the line - which served the first Monmouth Park racetrack - home to the "Jersey Derby" - with eleven sidings, before the Legislature banned betting on horses (with the deciding vote being cast by the founder of Asbury Park, Senator James Bradley) in 1894. The lan...
Thanks, Mikedc3! I almost made it up to the tower walking up the pipeline trench from Cedar Lake but ran into a bunch of fellows hunting and didn't want to ruin their day anymore than I already had, so went back down.
RE: my January 2, 2011, post in which I asked whether anyone had info on the use of track pans for steam engines on the Cut Off - the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad Historical Society kindly answered my question: "There was indeed a water tank and stand pipe at Blairstown. Blairstow...
I'm looking for pics of any trains on the cutoff preferably the later years (50's thru Conrail years) anyone know of any? I found one picture of an EL unit on the cutoff but it doesn't specify where, and most of the other pics are from the early years. Well this 1940 aerial is ten years before the ...
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone would know when the DL&W tracks were pulled up over the crossing (or the old road in general). Was it around the time the L&H's tracks were pulled or much earlier? Thanks for your help. The DL&W old row had all its rail pulled up in 1974. The L&H's...
