Re: Commuter Rail Electrification

How so? Electric EMUs/trains will certainly help in local train situation given their far superior acceleration, which will allow shorter headways. Combine with dwell time reduction/full level boarding and it certainly could help capacity.

That was the plan at least on the northern side of the Orange - the third express track is now finally being put to use for testing the new rolling stock. I believe the original Red Line plans were always two tracks on the north and the Braintree branches (no room in the ROW for a third?). Google Ma...

That's amazing that an electric locomotive will last 200 years! And we can take advantage of the cheap electricity generated by Pilgrim I nuclear power plant! [Off topic fun fact: Pilgrim is the same model as the F u k u s h i m a nuclear reactors, but one year newer] (phpBB thinks * is a swear wor...

Yes, primarily freight, but efficiency numbers are still good, and the article does state that electrification is better for passenger trains in terms of acceleration and speed. There is no payback for converting to electrification. It also doesn't take into effect that electric locomotives are an ...

Yeah, I get that, more of is the electrification still a requirement and happening, or is the T just ignoring it (as they probably should). Also, double tracking isn't going to still help with the bottle neck of the single tracking from Braintree on up.

Wasn't one of the environmental requirements for the SCR electrification of the line?

Would a light rail from Alewife to Lexington really make sense in the middle of Mass. Ave. and other streets? Or would the bike and hiking trail through Arlington Hts. be taken back to put in light rail? Is light rail quiet enough that residents who opposed the Red Line going through Arlington Hts....

Yes, this was always in the plans as a phase 2/stretch goal. With budgeting back in check and work finally happening, hopefully it gets done in this round.

I think Red is targeting 3 minute headways (6 minute on the branches), orange is 4:30.

How much did you JAL trip cost, how long did it last, how long were you given for "a sitting" of a meal? How much does the typical Acela trip costs and how long does it last? Irrelevant, because PPS I also don't for a moment expect the government to subsidize my bougie dietary needs. I'm ...

Suggesting that Acela First Class serve hot dogs is boneheaded, and frankly doesn’t sound like it’s coming from anyone who’s buying those tickets. Acela trains do not come with a diner and galley capable of serving steaks. They are equipped with a bistro car with stand-by tables - that's why the wi...

Monorail! Should have kept the Central Artery & converted it to transit + elevated park. Why not build an elevated if it saves billions in tunneling costs? Also, it would be cheaper to build Red, Orange, or Green Line between North Station & South Station rather than heavy rail; Use the Gra...

Filling the tunnel isn't an issue - as you already said it will happen, and, it will happen in conjunction with electrification/Regional Rail and the conversion of a more s-banh style system using low headway EMUs. Also, it isn't about reverse commuting (although that certainly could become more of ...

Build it. Build it NOW! Just not with these horribly inflated numbers and terribly stupid alignment that is clearly meant to torpedo it (just like the Red/Blue). Nothing will be more transformative for regional transportation.
