Re: Grade Crossings - the real tragedy in railroading

Of course, with PTC in place, it's all that much easier to design a system that sits at the grade crossing and drops signals if there's an incursion. Actually, the technology to do so is so off the shelf and out there, it's pretty sad the industry hasn't gone in that direction already, but apparent...

Re: R179 Procurement Delivery and Acceptance

2 questions of my own are: Why are the R-179's being trucked in instead of being delivered by rail? And which yard are they being delivered to? (I understand that the answer to the second might explain the first one too).

Based on what i saw, I guess the R179s will be also 60-footers like the R160s rather than 75 feet, since they are making 5-car sets to complete a 600ft long trainset They're going back to 60 foot cars on B division. This is because 1. Some lines can't accomodate 75 footers, and 2. On a 600 foot tra...

Liquor licenses means more money for the city. As to complaining aobout the railroad, ;et's not forget that this city has a road vehicle mentality. Most people are clueless as to how much road congestion and air pollution get reduced by running trains.

Can fencing be put up to keep drunks off the tracks? Does the development of all these night spots mean fewer customers for NYA?

A little background for my question, and the question itself: 1. Since the NYC subway/el system was fully electrified in 1903, every train has at least 2 motor cabs, including 1 at each end either of which can be the one used to drive the train. 2. Most terminal stops take advantage of that design i...

The risks of train hopping so far outweigh the enjoyment derived - death, dismemberment. arrest. However, train spotting is a different thing.

This is encouraging news with regard to the line opening within reason for the end of this year deadline. At least it's fair to expect that they wouldn't be testing track stability unlesss there was a substantial amount of track to test.

I've noticed that the Jamaica line, the elevated part is for it's entire length wide enough for 3 tracks - but while there are some short stretches with a center track, most of the line has a wide open space between the 2 main tracks, some of it with open trackway, or catwalk planking, maintenance s...

We shouldn't forget that in the R-62's and R-68's that were converted into 4 or 5 car groups had the driver and conductor controls in all but the end cabs disabled or disassembled. Also, wihthin each group, the couplers were replaced w ith linkbars between any two cars within the group. Thus, cars i...

It's a shame that they have so little activity along First Avenue now. Not only did it provide for good trainspoting when that had more customers, but the neighborhood is so congested with the truck traffic.

To answer the original questions, 1. The private operators were hurt by the combination of not being permitted fare increases, AND having IND service closely paralleling parts of their service. 2. Of course the subway map would look much different if the city had built where there wasn't any subways...

I recently (this Tuesday) stopped in to the Second Avenue Subway information center on Second Avenue in the 80's. They insist that in spite of the present dealys, they will be meeting the December 30, 2016 deadline for Phase I to open. They also maintain that between the $1.5 billion that's presentl...

I have a commment and a question on this one. First, I say that it's better to close the tunnel entirely for 18 months than to single track it for 3 years. Not only will the work be done sooner, but the pain relly won't be much different. If the tunnel and the Manhattan part of the line will be clos...
