Too bad that Canadian railway infrastructure has largely been weakened to the point where re-routes aren't feasible in most circumstances. For example, the oil tanker traffic from western Canada/USA has absolutely no business being towed through the GTA and onto the Corridor destined for Montreal's ...
BC Rail -- Tumbler Ridge Subdivision, northern BC. per Wikipedia: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BC_Rail) In the early 1980s the railway built a new line and acquired another. The Tumbler Ridge Subdivision, an 82-mile (132 km) electrified branch line, opened in 1983 to the Quintette and Bullmoose mi...
Wouldn't they unexpand when the temperatures return to normal? Never heard of 'heating' rail when its installed. There are systems that create the welds for joining sections of continuously welded rail, that involve thermite. But there's no machine that installs rails "hot". High temperatu...
No surprise. The VIA trains run very consistently on-time and even early these days, which means that traffic must be down a reasonable amount, at least in Western Canada. Really unfortunate for a lot of people as the staffing ramp-up at CN has made for some absolutely meteoric ascensions from Condu...
There are no intermediate or service stops. So why would there be a timetable?
Kamloops-Vancouver, you can go extrapolate that using the VIA schedule. But usually the RM is treated fairly well, and the directional running corridor through the Fraser Canyon usually isn't too delay prone.
Yup. VIA isn't short on dining cars. They just need the older ones brought up to modern standards so its a dignified experience for the customers, and a reasonably healthy and safe workplace for the staff.
Moose Jaw. But they're not long for this world...

There isn't much information on VIA's site. This is the description of the refurbishment: "Kitchen reconfiguration and modernization of the dining area." The four being refurbished have left VIA short of dining cars. The two from the Churchill trains have been used on the Canadian this su...
Just wondering if anybody has heard how the refurbishment of these 4 diners is going??? I'm taking a trip on the "Canadian" in February 2020... The Canadian's diners were refurbished 5-7 years ago or so, and are in excellent shape. Aside from tweaks such as LED lighting, I doubt there wil...
They are only refurbishing four (4) dining cars? Wiki suggests their roster includes 13 dining cars, what do they plan to do with the remaining nine (9) dining cars? ~6 are already refurbished and are in operation on The Canadian. The "plan" appears to be to convert The Ocean to Budd equi...
Cynically I suspect this is a way to try and woo Peterborough voters without spending any real money given the long lasting dream to boost Peterborough real estate prices by making commuting to Toronto viable. Though it could backfire if the people in the communities that currently get VIA service ...
I know with this fare you don't have a choice of rooms? But we could wait till about two months out and try and save almost $1000? There's almost always a Black Friday or similar sale that's valid in most of the off-season. That generates a discount that is just as good in most cases as the Sleeper...
