Re: Why does the Auto-Train Service Approach being Profitabl

There’s not a ton of things that can really be done to increase the profitability of the AT in its current form. The route is pretty well set. CSX will not allow a longer train. The only real options are to raise prices or cut back on some on board amenities. As long as the train is consistently sel...

This might be splitting hairs over the word choice, but why would the engineer jump out of train when saw saw another train coming on a different track? The NTSB said he saw the train coming, and before it eneteted the switch he jumped off. If you threw the switch, then you wouldn’t be worried, right?

Is there any sort of plan in place should the current tunnels become unusable? Clearly the plan is to build new tunnels but let’s say tomorrow the current tunnels are declared “Unfit for duty” or God Forbbid, one or both of the collapses. What would NJT/Amtrak do roll new ones could be built or the ...

Can the whole train fit under 30th street? Not even sure is the Superliners can fit under there let alone the Auto-Racks. Someone mention it a bit ago but a smaller Auto-Rack able to do 110 for the NEC then MAS for the rest of the trip to Florida and using Viewliner equipment. Not sure how difficult...

Maybe I’m reading what you wrote wrong, but will the FL-9s be running from Boston to Albany on 448/449?

At least in this case, it might have been helpful that the cafe car snapped the way it did. All the engery from the cars behind it was channeled outwards instead of forwards. The cafe car acted as a “spring”.

Just throwing it out there, but: don't rule out private equity as an acquirer. I could easily see a company like Fortress getting involved, particularly if there's the possibility of a public-private partnership providing $$ for passenger-focused improvements. Hey, who knows-- maybe the successor t...

Is CSX having a "fire sale", or an auction with reserve? Is putting almost the whole system up for sale, a few sections at a time, a way to find if any parts are worth more sold than kept? Right now they are in the "study" phase, deciding whether or not to offer certain lines fo...

What would happen if after an inspection one or both exiting tunnels are deemed unsafe with Amtrak lacking the resources to repair them? This could very well happen if the feuding between the federal government and the states continues. Indeed it is likely to continue for decades -- good luck getti...

While I feel the line should still have its partial electrification from the New Haven days, now that’s it’s gone, it will most likely never come back. As a CT resident, there is much more important things we need to spend money on. Maybe if this line becomes very popular and CT can get some help fr...

My concern will allowing passengers without a car is they take a “seat” away from someone with a car, which is money lost. Granted it is cheaper to move a passenger without a car then one with one but, I don’t think it would be to the point where a passenger without a car would net more then one wit...

I know this statement is beyond clichè, but I feel it still holds true here, bad people will always do bad things. isn't the Auto Train high and/or wide? One of a few reasons it doesn't go north of Washington area. Not a problem anymore since the Virginia Avenue Tunnel replacement. Getting that train north of Washington DC would be fantastic. The traffic around D.C. is insane. No it isn't high wide but is plate...
