Having grown up next to the NYNH&H 4 track main line in southern Connecticut, commuted to high school on NH trains, commuted to Boston from Stamford on the NH and later commuted to grad school in NYC on NH trains, (and I even had a NH charge card back before charge cards became common), I really...

Safetee, I remember the NYNH&H "candy butcher" well as he made his way through the coach cars when I used The Commander from Stamford to Boston...he got out at New Haven, I believe. That train flew, arriving at Back Bay around midnight leaving Stamford sometime around 9 pm. All that wa...

As far as I know, Amtrak is supposed to be a National Passenger Railroad System, not a collection of fragments of short, uncoordinated trains. To simply chop a system to pieces, and cut your way to deficit free status is easy: keeping and expanding a true national system take a whole lot more brain ...

If you want to see what a real breakfast looks like aboard a train dining car, go to today's Train Orders and see photos of what this mornings breakfast on the Ocean looks like. And, it comes out of a small pantry with a convection oven! The other US food service which is quite different from Amtrak...

Remember that the DownEaster dining car is under the management of Patrica Quinn's organization which runs that service: not Amtrak. And yes, the beer choice is excellent, in fact, on my last trip, half a bottle of excellent beer dumped on my lap when the passenger in the seat ahead of me pushed bac...

We just finished an alternate month trip Syracuse, NY/Denver, CO this past weekend and the difference between food service on the CZ compared to the new "enhanced" menu on the Lake Shore will turn your hair white. CZ, good crew, normal Amtrak fare, Lake Shore first a "reception" ...

Oh, Southern Railway, your allocation of food services to sleeping car revenue is just too simple and makes too much sense..."creative accounting" has been mastered along time ago at Amtrak.

R&DB, There is also the fact that most advanced nations in the world do in fact have extensive and intensive railroad based short and long distance passenger service and their citizens seem to be accepting of what some have called out modded or nostalgic based means of getting about their nation...

David Benton: Over the past 15 years or so during many trips aboard Amtrak and VIA long distance trains, I have met really interesting people from all over the world (including NZ!) simply by being seated with them in the dining car. Of course, I could use a airline but I am retired, I love to obser...

We have done a fair amount of Amtrak and VIA travel over the past 14 years and have always had wonderful discussions with other people we are seated with in the dining cars. Aboard the Canadian, for instance, we met an older couple who made yearly trips Toronto/Vancouver to visit their children: we ...

Mr. Norman: In the 55+ years since I had a club sandwich in a Pennsylvania RR Grill Car heading home from WDC, I have never had a better one. Yes, the productivity was likely far less than today's Amtrak lounge service but, to me, what makes quality of life peaks is measured by a different ruler. St...

When I traveled on the NYNH&H RR back in the 1960's, I had a charge card issued by that railroad on which I charged not only tickets but also in the dining car. Low tech but it worked. The lounge car must handle lots of cash from what I have seen aboard the Amtrak trains I ride, and perhaps ther...

Shore Line Christmas times past

About two weeks ago, I did a round trip NYC/Brunswick, ME via Acela and DownEaster. This pre Christmas season tends to bring back memories and during these trips certainly did that to me. Christmas lights in small New England towns really are lovely: much has changed since I first rode the same line...

Back in the 1960's, I frequently made weekend roundtrips from Boston where I was in collage to Stamford, CT near where my family lived because I worked weekends at my family's business. I usually took the Gilt Edge at 4 pm from South Station (often sitting on my suitcase) Friday and returned Sunday ...

Noel, I always find whatever you post about the NYNH&H just wonderful! I do hope that you will create some sort of history of your life & times with this grand railroad, so much of the real stories about many grand creations of man are lost forever and those who appreciate and value history ...
