Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

I am curious about one aspect of the dining contract: when the contract is up, I assume that NNEPRA advertises for food service submittals; out of that comes a decision on which company will be used to provide dining services on the Downeaster for the life of the contract. In general, do the dining ...

Apparently the landowners who were paid handsomely for an easement want to build a condo over the tracks which the MBTA says interferes with their Red Line car testing, etc etc. . To me it sounds like the court decision will a) determine who wins , and b) will probably be appealed, etc. Time will te...

My daughter and her husband spent the holiday week with us, coming up from Roanoke on Saturday, and returning after a week on the Sunday Boston to Roanoke trains. The weekend trains require a transfer at Penn Station. Both trips went very well; on the way up, daughter spoke to the Conductor around B...

Thanks all who posted here regarding my (admittedly, poorly-worded ) topic; daughter and husband will be going totransfer at Penn Station, and they will be discussing their concerns with the conductor on 156, about getting to 168 to Boston.. No doubt there will be others making the same transfer; I ...

My daughter and her husband are visiting for Christmas; coming from Roanoke to Boston. The few previous train trips coming to Boston in the past were always direct, but on Saturday, they switch trains at Penn Station (156 to 168) around 7:00 PM. They are concerned that they won't be able to find 168...

Thinking of taking 682/683 next Thursday to ride the Dome Car with a couple of friends -; anyone have a feel for how crowded that train might be? IN the past, there has always been plenty of room ( no Celtics/Bruins or Sox game in Boston that day).

I spent a little time in the Dome car on Tuesday heading to Portland; I was amazed at how much the backl end of the locomotive bounced and swayed, which was not felt at all in the Dome car. The view was very nice; and at the time I was up there, the car was comfortably full ( still a few empty seats...

The article in today's Boston Globe regarding the MBTA's failure to reimburse AMTRAK for track maintenance includes a mention of the Downeaster - as part of the section where AMTRAK is threatening to curtail service to Boston if the MBTA doesn't coff up the dough-re-me, while the MBTA says AMTRAK in...

out of curiosity, and in general, would this car be running on the Downeaster as a result of an AMTRAK initiative or an NNEPRA initiative? IF the former, then it may be a one time only, if the latter, it might become a regular event. I hope that in either case, the 'reliable source' is spot on.

The photos of the construction progress in Brunswick (MLF) show what appears to be a large depressed area on the East end of the building, looks to be 3 or 4 feet below the grade level, possibly covered in plastic sheeting. Anyone know the purpose of this excavation?

Does that mean that the new AMTRAK station that the City of Roanoke is building will go on the parking lot between 1st and S. Jefferson along Norfolk Ave? It's a pretty slim piece of land between the street and the railyard. I guess a lot depends on how they deal with Norfolk St. and the design of t...

So it's been almost a year since I learned where the Amtrak Roanoke station will be - in the recently reconstructed Virginian brick station at the intersection of Williamson and Jefferson. From the aerial view, the reconstruction looks like it is complete ( at least the roof, anyway), although stree...

So, if the schedule is the problem with attracting FRP riders - and on the front end, from BON to BRK(FRP), it seems to be ok - will the back end -BRK(FRP)-BON- benefit when the BLF is finished and they add an additional round trip from Brunswick? Hope so; looking at the current schedule, it looks l...
