Re: West side of Newark Branch

It's equally amazing that we let people with those sort of exclusionary opinions dictate our transportation/land use policies... Realistically speaking, though, something to preserve the corridor as a corridor (rather than a slowly evolving series of reclamations) should be done. A rail trail would ...

Re: Amtrak Gateway Tunnels

Regardless of where their editorial standing lays, the News, Newsday, and the Post are all locally circulated papers, while that of The Journal and Times is worldwide in scope. "It figures" that those three papers (one of which is based "on the Island") are opposed to Gateway, for how often will th...

Re: Crain's Article on New York/New Jersey Connectivity

GCT's capacity issues can be summed up in one word: Park Avenue Tunnel and Viaduct. Okay, that's five LOL! As for more or fewer trains, I don't think there are fewer, just a very different mix since all LD is out of NYP. I would *imagine* that the interlockings at either end of the Park Avenue stre...

Re: Crain's Article on New York/New Jersey Connectivity

This is the future, I think. Our regional transportation authorities will fight any such effort in any way they can (because muh fiefdom, right), but I think it's important to dispel this myth that NYC's rail infrastructure is at capacity. People are right to point out that more tunnels =/= more tra...

Re: Freight Branch adjacent to PATH tracks in Jersey City

National Docks is still there, but the connection to the old River Line is of course severed -- all traffic goes into Long Dock over towards Croxton. Traffic from the north into OI goes down the Northern Branch (or, I guess on the rare occasion that such a move is necessary, from Croxton) via Long D...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

I don’t subscribe to a good bit of what this blog says, but this post seems relevent here, and frankly raises some good points. Gist is that this fascination with the Talgos obfuscates many deeper issues with US rail safety, and is unhelpful insofar as equipment falling off a bridge at 80mph can onl...

Re: Cascade Wreck 18 December 17

I’m a bit disappointed by the focus on the Talgo cars in this accident. Yeah, they didn’t help, but I’ve gotta ask how well a train car can do when coming off the rails at 80mph — is it worthwhile to whip up a fury about that exemption? For whatever it’s worth, the Amfleets (built to American standa...

Re: LIRR Mainline Third Track Project

Governor's acceleration actually has had some really negative long term effects. He killed the transit provision, escalated costs, and put the screws to the contractor in a way that was frankly a bit dangerous. https://archpaper.com/2018/09/mario-m-cuomo-bridge-controversy/" onclick="window.open(thi...

Re: North-South Rail Link Discussion

We don't need South Station to run more trains. Turnaround times at the existing facility are ridiculously long, even by American commuter rail standards. Fix that, and you have more capacity without significant expense. If you're going to build, you might as well make the investment that has real l...

Re: Southern Tier - East of Binghamton

There exists more than capital cost here. You'd presumably need to re-qualify crews, probably add crews to bases along the tier, and possibly would need a new train start, if none could be peeled off the Lehigh as you suggest. You'd also have to spend more on fuel (Tier profile isn't that forgiving,...

Re: Southern Tier - East of Binghamton

Assuming rail volumes get up to projections, 82 containers/day is nothing. That's 41 wells on the back of an existing CSX IM train. NS would need a massive volume commitment between somewhere that can't be got to easily via the Lehigh Line and NYC and would moreover need to actually want to take tha...
