Re: Amtrak Gateway Tunnels

While the tunnel will be bored with a TBM, there will be substantial support activities in the river requiring USACE and USCG involvement. On the east (Manhattan) end of the proposed tunnel, the combination of inadequate cover (as low as 9.5 feet) and poor geotechnical conditions will not permit TBM...

A few things to consider: 1. Amtrak is not an open-and-shut case of being a gov't agency. We've gone into this before and don't need to here. As such, it's not an open-and-shut case of whether it is subject to FOIA. 2. The costs of meeting FOIA are probably immense, so it's not surprising they are ...

This is a film done by the Morrison Knudsen, contractor for the Crookton relocation, called A Better Way for the Santa Fe . It has lots of information on the project, plus some features that are classic 1950's & 60's vintage travelogue. Pentrex, the rail video producer, included a VHS tape of th...

I realize the facilities at Williams Junction was next to none, but that wouldn’t matter if the California Zephyr ran anywhere close to on time. It’s on time performance is so bad that even a tourist train can’t afford to have a train and it’s crew waiting for transferring passengers from it on a d...

Two more coming out named after cities they most likely will never visit :-) Soooo True! Ever wondered how many state capitals Amtrak actually visits? No column: (1) Anchorage (2) Honolulu, (3) Olympia, (4) Boise, (5) Carson City, (6) Phoenix, (7) Santa Fe, (8) Helena, (9) Pierre, (10) Baton Rouge,...

What Mr. Anderson said was that they might stop service on tracks without PTC after 12/31/18, not that they will as implied by the misleading news headline and topic title. Instead of relying on someone else's interpretation of what he said, why not read his actual testimony and come to your own con...

Historically, the AAA discount was good for the railroad because it invited skeptics aboard. On the other hand, limiting the minors' rate to one child per parent smells like a targeted correction. The NAACP may have something to say about it. One correction concerning the child fare change. The new...

Always wondered why they didn't go to a center pole setup when they electrified the New Haven to Boston section of the NEC. One of the most controversial aspects of the project was the aesthetics of the poles and overhead wires. Going to a center pole would have eliminated half of the poles. ... Tw...

I believe HEP and power cable capacity limits Amtrak trains to a maximum of 18 passenger cars. The real constraint may be the ability to find spare cars that can be positioned for the trip. Last year's train was 15 cars. I would expect this year's to be similar.

The idea that commuter trains will ever reach 125 mph before having to slow down for their next station is questionable. At least in the 1990s NJT rated the ALP44s for 125 on NEC on the Trenton expresses (at least in theory, not sure if in actual practice). Commuter equipment on the NEC is now rate...

Dunkin likely looks at this as a marketing opportunity. They get their name in front of a couple of thousand captive customers a day, who hopefully remember the brand when they head out for coffee off the train. They may consider the Acela passenger demographic as an underserved market for them, as ...
