Re: Amtrak Empire Service (New York State)

Huge hypothetical thought here, but I wonder if moving the Hudson station to the base of the Rip would yield any quality of life improvements. Theoretically you'd have room to have better parking and be in a better position for intermodal service with bus and possibly better rental access. Plus it w...

Re: Far Rockaway Opinion?

Thanks everyone for the helpful input. At the moment I'm leaning towards Rock Park at the end of the Shuttle, but the LIRR to Long Beach is looking just as appealing. I'd like to actually ride the LIRR (never have) and get some 'island' miles under my belt, haha. I'm guessing the LIRR takes just as ...

Re: Long Beach Opinion?

Yeah, I misspoke (mistyped? Lol)

I meant Rockaway Beach (A) and Far Rockaway (LIRR), not Long Beach. I don't know why my brain put out Long Beach, haha.

Far Rockaway Opinion?

Hey Everyone, I've been considering taking the A out to Rockaway one weekend to check out the beach and the ocean. How's the general vibe there? Some people have told me parts of Rockaway can be a little sketch, but the same can be said for anywhere. I'm assuming the usual just be aware of your envi...

Re: Amtrak plans train service to New York State Fair

How many attendees vs the State Fair? Who knows, it may be a matter of the right person asking Amtrak... I didn't find much online regarding attendance, Greg. The official farm show site lists over four hundred exhibitors, and another unrelated website estimated between 20k - 30k guests over the th...

Re: Amtrak plans train service to New York State Fair

It'd be nice if they did the same for the Farm Show. I went a couple times in high school with my ag mechanics class and I'd like to go again without driving all the way to Syracuse.

I can't believe these are getting rebuilt already, that makes me feel old. I'm not crazy about the new CTRail scheme on them, I think I liked the simplified McGinnis scheme better.

Re: Can someone ID this car?

Those are autoracks, they're enclosed car and truck carriers. They can carry cars on two or three levels depending on their height, and larger trucks can use up an entire rack. The ends of the cars have large doors that swing open to load. A ramp is placed at the end of the train for the vehicles to...

Re: Empire Service (New York State)

Determining whether to drive to Wassaic or Poughkeepsie would probably depend on where in Columbia and Duchess Counties you live. If you live very close to the Hudson River or a few miles, then you would drive to Poughkeepsie. However, the closer you live to the NY/MA border, the closer you are to ...

Re: Empire Service (New York State)

Thanks for sharing that shady, I always enjoy seeing older timetables. I wonder how feasible it would be to send a couple Albany-terminating trains north to Saratoga (at least during pony season)? Would CP allow extra trains? Would the layover be any easier now that the SNC is gone? That'd probably ...

Re: Empire Service (New York State)

This is gonna sound like a crappy pun, but I wonder if the track in Saratoga would be willing to pony up and fund some extra trains from Albany, or at least some longer ones. I avoid traveling to see my family up there like the plague when pony season is on; 68/69 gets wicked sardine-canned with peo...

Re: Empire Service (New York State)

Wassaic's my "I don't feel like committing to a certain train home/Grand Central has way better food" station (I'm about 25-minutes from Rhinecliff or Wassaic), and my past experience is that Wassaic's been slightly busier than Rhinecliff during the off-peak. I've never paid attention to how many fo...

Re: Silver Line Dulles WMATA Metrorail progress/pictures

Once the Silver Line is complete, would I be able to walk to the big air museum from the Metro? In the past I've made day trips down on Amtrak and taken it to the smaller museum on the National Mall, but obviously that's a bit easier to do from Union Station. In the future I'd like to do an overnigh...

Re: Train watching locations around Railroad Museum of New England, CT

You could catch Route 8 south and drive down to Norwalk. The aquarium there is right below the NEC and there are several restaurants along the sound where you can eat outside and watch trains. Driving on Route 84 (after a hop on 8) will take you into Danbury where you can visit the Danbury Railway m...
