Re: December 7, 1941

Ironically the NYC chose Dec. 7th because Sundays were always 'slow news days', so they figured the new streamlined train would get more newspaper coverage than it would have on another day of the week.

Sorry for re-surfacing an old posting. Anyway, important to understand the Olympian Hiawatha was the post-war streamlined version of the Milwaukee's old Olympian transcontinental (Chicago - Seattle) train. The Milwaukee did very well with the Hiawatha competing with the Burlington and other railroad...

"The Hudson Division of the New York Central was named for the Hudson River it parallels." Yes, but I think the main reason is that it was originally the Hudson River RR. For a while after they joined, the Central was called the New York Central & Hudson River RR. "The nickname of...

My understanding is that for the first few years of the agreement, only cars intended to be used on joint Milw-UP trains were repainted into UP yellow. Later (c.1959?) the Milwaukee Road decided it was better to repaint all their passenger equipment. I agree that a big factor was maintaining one pas...

This film was one of the first VHS railroad tapes I bought back in the 1980's, always fun to see it again! One thing I've wondered about is the model railroad scenes towards the end (starting about 31:30). Since GN was headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, I've wondered if it might have been the Twi...

I know that in 1960 (or thereabouts) Great Northern combined the Western Star and the Fast Mail between the Twin Cities and Seattle. This often lead to the Western Star having 20+ cars, usually 2/3rds of which were baggage, RPO, express or other 'head end' cars. I was wondering, did the CB&Q run...

Re: NYC H16-44: Black or gray?

Has anyone seen the actual 2014 model? It could be the picture posted is just an undec engine someone at Atlas painted and lettered to get a picture to post on their website / catalog. They maybe got the color wrong on it, or due to lighting it looks dark gray rather than black, but it could the pro...

Generally, the cars were cleaned out using powerful hoses, spraying from the outside through the lower slats of the sides. The water used was usually mixed with a cleaning mix (bleach? chlorine?) that left a white stain on the lower part of the car over time...part of the reason some railroads paint...

I think at least early on - until they had shown themselves to be less reliable than the E-units - PAs could be found on many of the top-end NYC passenger trains. Tempting to say for a 1950's NYC passenger train that the most unrealistic part of the train described is all the cars being in the same ...

When you watch the GCT part of Pentrex' NYC Combo DVD, you will see, that after the Century has left, the motor comes out of the end of the track on its tail, waiting at the end of the platform until the Century has cleared the relevant sections. That confirms, that the train was pulled to the plat...

Well searching the web for "cartoon of railroad tracklaying crew" only came up with photos of girls laying on railroad tracks. What's up with that?

About the only one available is the 60' RPO car - with a little work. If you get the Walthers / Rivarossi 60' RPO with six wheel trucks, you can swap the floor - chassis assembly with their 60' coach or combine to get the correct 4-wheel trucks. BTW if you're doing a heavyweight 20th Century Ltd, I ...

5344 became the Commodore Vanderbilt before the 20th Century Limited was streamlined in 1938, so any NYC cars it pulled would have been Pullman green whether owned by Pullman or NYC. Not long after the original two-tone gray 20th C. scheme was introduced in 1938 (light gray car with dark gray band t...

C&NW could argue anything they wanted, but the BN merger wouldn't have happened if BN had to give up the NP (or a big chunk of it). If C&NW wanted the NP line, I'd assume they would have tried to get it when BN spun it off to Montana Rail Link. C&NW and NP/GN did interchange in the Twin ...

Well if nothing else, it seemed odd that a railroad in bankruptcy, and in the process of being taken over by another railroad (Soo Line) would build a new bridge, let alone put a huge herald for their railroad on it. That being said, it does look like that ancient looking bridge was actually built i...
