I was rear brakeman on CR NYSE-2(?) in 1979, the last through frt that ran out of West 72nd St yard to Selkirk, NY. This train went on duty at 700pm at W72nd St. . We came night before on SEOP (Selkirk-Oak Point (Bronx); rested at YMCA on 47th st (between 3rd-2nd Aves). Taxied to W72nd St yard offic...

NYCRRSon, I take it your Dad didn't make it to Amtrak takeover of operating crews (Train and Engine) in April 1986. In that month/year, (NYG)ALB-NFL trains operating crews worked ALB-NFL, layover in "Falls" (John's Quality Inn, near Rainbow Bridge), then NFL-ALB in am. Great run, good work...

Matt, thanks for correction on BC seating, both power cars had this seating...which caused some confusion on BC pax who paid extra, and coach pax sitting in other BC accommodation, which only regular coach fares were required.

Worked these Turbos for years out of ALB...Montreal/NFL/NYG-NYP/SYR. The State of New York, along with Amtrak, got their monies worth out of the 7 "6 car sets", nearly 30 years. Pax loved these trains for the extra large windows. BUT very expensive to operate. In first years, fuel was jet ...

When I worked the old West Shore (very sporadic, stayed on east side of Hudson River), we used this track to get to Kearney Yard, Waverly Five Yard and back door to to ex-EL yard , Croxton Yard. It was pretty cool to be pulling a train through Journal Square and watch the commuters on Path platforms...

There is a reason behind the seating on NYP-ALB trains, especially heavy travel times (i.e., PM trains out of Penn)...crew likes pax to know where they will "open up" RHI/HUD/ and the few that are getting off at YNY/CRT/POU. So when they say (as I used to load my trains): RHI-HUD front of ...

NYC Pacemaker box cars lasted into the mid-70's (with original paint schemes also, but very faded). I saw them when I was working "Puller" jobs (east end Selkirk yard jobs used to pull cars from class yard and build trains in departure yards)) and on the "Hump"; also out on the r...

That is a good one Shelly. That Tarryrown plant put a lot of "steak and potatos" on the table for everyone who worked the Hudson Div.! Took the train to NYP last Wed, and I pointed out where the old plant was (along with a very empty, rusty rails, Croton West Yard): now just flat concrete ...

I remember Mr. Sparks as a "Ghost Supt" ....not seen, but heard thru his operating people, good railroader ( I didn't know he was "Red Team" in "Green Territory"!) I remember one time in Rensselaer, Ron Berben was the Trainmaster in West Albany yard,( Ron would come dow...

"Black Pete" was one hell of a railroader...he will be missed by all rails that knew him and/or worked with him in Selkirk Yard. I was working the "Grain Train" (CR frt symboled "GRU", Selkirk to Hudson, NY (really Greenpoint, NY, near Claverack, on Claverack Secondary ...

When Selkirk-Cedar Hill were running (SK-Beacon-Danbury-Devon-NH (Cedar Hill Yd), until "qualified", we had a variety of "NH Pilots", who would run freights like they were running 2 car Budds! I remember Noel, he was a good frt "runner", who understood the "up and ...

Yeah same here, BR&P,...some of the old timers I worked with were late 1929 to 1939 men, who talked about it if you asked, but a lot of them were layed off in the Depression too. Now the '40,'41, and '42 men, they talked about the old days and working (serving) in the WWII Railway Battalions aro...

BR&P, sorry don't have anymore info on that wreck at Hudson, NY that occurred in the mid 60's. The people I worked with, who told me of the wreck, are sad to say, all gone now. The area where it happened was at the south end of Hudson yard, with a switch from the yard (east/land side) that came ...

I'll give a real quick story on the grades at CP Holmes. One night we had to take the siding, as we pulled down the siding and stopped, the rear end crew said we were "blocking" a crossing by a caboose "length"! Now the engr and I (the Conductor) looke at each other..."what ...
