I wouldn't really say it's walkable from the station, but Two Roads Brewing Company in Stratford is indeed trackside, and has (or had, last time I passed by) a fake white-and-red station sign facing the tracks on the back side of the building with their name on it.

Dunno about the LIRR but on the subway, stopping positions are set to minimize walking distance to the primary exit, not necessarily the center of the platform. For example if a station has one exit at the far north end and another at the midpoint, but the north end is "primary" (e.g. has ...

If you haven't already, I would suggest posting on the New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association forum , who could probably advise you pretty well on the potential value of these items. Agreed that it probably won't be much per item, but there are plenty of people out there who collect...

If I remember correctly the original incarnation of the NYW&B, oddly enough, did not plan to, but after the NH took over there was a plan called the Westchester Northern Railway which would run north from White Plains to Brewster and Danbury.

Per Metro-North's 2019 ETT, the maximum height clearance allowed between 97th St and the end of track at Grand Central is 14'10". Aha! According to Wikipedia, Superliners are 16'2", and some Googling reveals that NEC catenary is around 15'-15'6" on average. I knew that Superlines are...

I don't know an exact number but I recall reading somewhere that it isn't tall enough for catenary due to necessary vertical clearance between the train and wire, and then above the wire.

The current IP address belongs to Optimum, suggesting it is probably hosted out of the owner's home or small business, so maybe he is having some technical difficulties there.

My guess is that because the Q shuttle train is running, there are three goals, in decreasing order of priority: Get passengers to crosstown buses which connect the D/N to the Q shuttle trains. Load-balance crowds away from the F, Franklin Shuttle, and the Q shuttle buses, in service of #1. Some pas...

In NY, I believe Hudson to Albany is 110mph. There might be other areas north of Poughkeepsie as well. I think the max speed south of Poughkeepsie only reaches 90mph, and only in in small sections. In NJ, the NEC was recently upgraded to 160mph around New Brunswick. Current Acela I sets can only rea...

Re: NYC Subway Mid-Station Signals

In "classic" NYC Board of Transportation signal design, the signals 1/4-way in from the station entrance and 1/2-way in are there for headway performance, to get the next train into the station as close behind the leading train as can be done safely. There is usually an insulated joint wi...

I am not a lawyer, but isn't the phrase "Amtrak has a right to use these railroads’ tracks" just referring to the pre-existing agreements? Re-asserting a previous arrangement does not sound the same to me as "[using] their tracks however they please". I imagine Amtrak is trying t...

3.) Aside from Rockville Centre, Baldwin, Freeport, and Massapequa, Babylon was the only station with high-level platforms (which Babylon always had after the branch was electrified in 1925). Why were those the only ones? My guess is that they probably had the highest traffic on the branch? It's be...

Mineola really should have one or two island platforms. Even if the branch was only accessible from the northern two tracks, the crossing movement would be less of a problem because an OB-bound train could sit in the station on the middle track (because why not keep the doors open?) while waiting fo...

I would be surprised if any traces still exist. From the photos it looks like this was done before the subway structure was complete so the ramp was built directly leading into the tunnel, through the space where the ceiling would later be constructed. The right of way led from the end of the Bushwi...
