This is what I have gathered on the different class ones regarding promoting conductors to engineers....Obviously it varies terminal to terminal but this is a rough idea Norfolk Southern - By seniority, newer conductors will typically wait 7-10 years before being called to engine school CSX - By se...

You should receive your final offer right around a point on the calendar about 2 weeks out from the hire date. So if you are due to start December 15th, I would expect to see an email around the first of December. That said, be ready for anything. You may be given less than 2 weeks notice.

And another reason they would have air connected is that if a car, or cut of cars, is off air for more than 4 hours, they have to have a "Class 1 Air Brake Test". This can be a little time consuming. So by keeping them on air for however long they are left there, all the crew has to do is ...

Well ljpierce1965, I'd wait to get a few whiskers under my belt before I started collaborating that all of those sorry SOB's (your Union Brothers & Sisters regardless of craft) is the reason for rules. You may just find yourself breaking the sorry SOB rules at some point yourself (and I assure ...

Everything Desertdweller said is correct. But there is more still to it all. The job also depends on WHERE in the country you work, as well as for which railroad. Not all railroads are run the same, and as I found out a few months ago, not all railroads adhere to the same rulebook. Even among a sing...

I believe that BNSF requires the BMI to be no grater than 30 at the time of hiring. It is 40. Up to 35 isn't a problem. 35.1 to 39.99 is looked at on a case by case basis. 40 and up, you are disqualified. HOWEVER, don't take disqualification as the end all. Most doctors offices take your weight and...

Another thing I found out from a very good friend of mine at UP is that if you are terminated (fired) from any job within 2 years of applying with UP, that will also get you kicked to the curb during the application process.

I learned this one first hand.

Advice is great, but only from those who are seasoned and have knowledge of the advise needed. Go with what SLCHUB states. I didn't know that CSX was that different from us. Sure enough, I looked and CSX isn't listed as having adopted the GCOR. So that would have messed you up entirely. I don't hav...

Hello Everyone, I applied for the Conductor Trainee program and received an email to complete an assessment within 5 days of receiving said email. I took the assessment today, 3 days after receiving the email. My question is does everyone take those that apply or only applicants they are looking to...

Another piece of advice. Start STUDYING!!! The GCOR is one of several rule books you will be referring to. It reads like war and peace. Memorize the Signal aspects and indications. These must become as automatic and comfortable as scratching an itch without thinking about it. The problem with memori...

Just a suggestion. Don't limit yourself to one geographic area. Consider another region of the country entirely. BNSF is hiring like crazy up here in Minot, ND. Layoffs and furloughs? Not up here. They've got mercenaries from other areas working here because they're so short of crews. The class I'm ...

...........................When I applied and was asked the question 'have you ever plead guilty, been charged with or convicted of a felony' (don't remember the exact wording of the question) my answer was no. I have since learned that the BN can still find out even if case is made non-public thru...

Apply for every area you would like to work in. I did. I was asked to 4 hiring events. One each in Minot, Glasgow Montana, Miles City Montana (for the Glendive positions), and Havre Montana. I picked Minot since this is the center of activity for the Bakken Oil Patch and just about everything BNSF s...

I can't speak for UP but for BNSF it sometimes takes a few weeks (and longer sometimes) for them to cull through the applications. What their criteria are and what they look for is as diverse as to how many areas they hire for and how many people apply. Apply for Minot or a few other areas in Easter...
