Re: SEPTA to get multi-level railroad coaches

From a risk management perspective, it would be prudent to scrap the original 144 that was burned up. The structural steel under the car may have lost some of its structural integrity depending on the intensity of the heat from the fire. A weakened steel underframe can be prone to stress cracks, com...

Did the MARC cars go back to Maryland? They are kind of superfluous now that the push pull fleet isn’t needed for rush hour service.

I’m retiring at the end of the month. My age concerns me about commuting on the train, so I’ve been driving to the city. The experts on TV say the older you get, the greater your chances are for complications if you get the virus. I can tell you that ridership has definitely plummeted just from look...

So basically, no train service to Delaware for the month of August? That should throw off the Bell Curve for Regional Rail ridership numbers in 2020. The CSX mainline is only a mile from the NEC in Newark. I wonder if anyone at DelDOT or SEPTA reached out to CSX about supplementing train service to ...

Where is SEPTA going to get the funds to purchase these new MU’s at $3-$4 million per car? I thought the Act 89 / Turnpike money runs out in 2021. If the fleet has about 200 Silverliner IV’s, you’re looking at 600-800 million for a fleet replacement. I’m doubting the credibility of the “senior state...

Another unforeseen cost to SEPTA assuming service to Harrisburg or Pittsburgh is bathrooms onboard the train. The PA state law requires bathrooms on trains but holds an exemption for:
-B units
-trains running less than 60 miles
-certain grandfathered switcher locomotives

SEPTA seems to have enough on their plate trying to run a short line sized regional rail system. They should put this service out to bid and see what Virgin, Keolis, and Bombardier have to offer to PennDot. With a $16 million operating subsidy, and $41 in annual rent from SEPTA, I could see the stat...

This project might foster a little more support from the top brass at SEPTA now that there is a new Skipper coming to the helm in January. Her prior responsibilities at PennDot probably gave her a “big picture” view of the transportation needs of the Commonwealth. It will be interesting to see if Le...

Change is good. Performance and ridership is cyclical on Regional Rail. In the early 80’s ridership tanked during the 100 day SEPTA strike. Over the years, ridership numbers recovered, then Railworks shut down the railroad between Fern Rock and Market East and ridership plummeted again. Then gasolin...

A recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer noted the cost of implementing SEPTA Key has hit $200 million. Assuming a passenger pays the highest fare per one-way trip ($10 for a one way trip to NJ), it will take at least 20 million passenger trips just to break even for the cost of designing and b...

Instead of reinventing the wheel, what’s wrong with using a proven design like the Chicago Highliner MU? They worked since 1971. To eliminate the need for a converter, can everything on the new ML-V EMU run off alternating current? Traction motor, HAVC, lights, air compressor, etc? I’m sure Siemens,...

Amtrak will charge a arm and a leg to operate the service to Pottstown. Best bet would be to have PennDot and DVARP negotiate trackage rights on NS (and possibly SEPTA) purchase the equipment, and subcontract the operation to NS, Keolis, Bombardier or Virgin Trains. NS could be offered large real es...
