What year did SK Tower close & where was the work sent to control the interlocking plant? I can document SK being open day and night 10/64 but by then SM was a CP. Where did all this work go; the TCS machine in Utica at the time only went as far east as CP-5 way up into 1970.

Disregard the above post. It is not correct in that pipes identified as steam exhaust are in reality steam delivery pipes. The rearward facing pipe at the rear engine on the right side is the high pressure steam supply that runs forward thru the front engine frame to supply steam to the forward cyli...

Can anyone shed light on the function of the steam exhaust pipe running toward the rear of the locomotive? Note: there are two pipes from this right rear cylinder, one to the smokebox for draft, and one that goes toward rear of locomotive in front of right rear driver. What is the function of this r...

Last year at North Conway observed an F-unit with the left side front porthole set back approximatel 1/2 the width of the porthole with that of the right side port hole. Have worked on hundreds of F-units in 42 yeras of engine service and never noticed this on other units. My recollection is that bo...

Many (not all) E-44 locomotives have what appears to be a shunt attached to the individual journals from the truck sideframe on the left side of the locomotive only. This does not appear to be a universal application. What was its purpose: a shunt for cab signals or for propulsion return current?

Unsubstantiated recollections from service in the 1960's as traveling diesel foreman. The ACL had one 500 class psgr unit that had a short nose on an E-6 frame. Don't remember its number, it came back from LaGrange after being the lead unit on #1 that went into the countryside running 90MPH at Dilli...

Was General Steel Industries refered to as General Steel Castings? Many locomotive heavy castings of the 50's & 60's had the initials GSC cast on the piece. Thanks for sharing Baldwin & ALCO were behind GSI; never realized that fact.
