It's looks as if the Copperwood Mine project would use the CN White Pine Sub located at Thomaston about 11 miles from the Project via County Road 519. There is an existing loading station at Thomaston which is used for timber, they would make upgrades to county road 519 to handle mine truck traffic.
Article about the Eagle Mine project. CN L'Anse sub will service the Humboldt mill to transport concentrate from the mill to a smelter. I think around 300 carloads a year for six years. MARQUETTE COUNTY -- Construction on Kennecott's Eagle Mine project is continuing right on schedule. It's come a lo...
It's a sad day in the Western U.P. as another industry the White Pine Refinery closes its doors. One needs to wonder, when copper prices are very high, why this was considered a good business move. We need industry that provides jobs at a living wage. It is a sorrowful and stressful time for many in...
Apparently, CN has closed the rail spur to White Pine. I don't know if it's the whole line or Bergland to White Pine or Thomaston to White Pine.
Celotex is still the main shipper yes. Are some others also but not sure what they ship. Just makes you wonder when you see SD70 and 75 running on a line with 80 pound rail if that maybe the end for line is not that far off. They also ran a big modern six axle on the White Pine sub late last fall to...
The L'Anse sub has or had engine restrictions "six-axle locos are not permitted on this subdivision. But they seem to follow the any unit anywhere no matter how heavy the power and light the rail philosophy. The track is crumbling quickly. Does anyone think they will rebuild it or just remove it?
The state of Michigan will most likely do nothing to preserve the rail for the future industry opportunities. MDNR is looking at it as this will make a great snowmobile trail, but that supports the economy maybe three months out of the year...If I was CN would sit on this line for a while and see wh...
With the White Pine refinery on a day to day basis it appears the closing is coming any day now. It will be interesting to see what CN will do with the sub once the current owner closes up the refinery for good.
Hard to say what CN will do, I think they will hang on to it for a while yet until something happens with the refinery if sold or moved. That branch would be the last rail left going that far west if EL&S ends up taking up the rail from Sidnaw to Ontonagon. White Pine still has the power plant r...
It looks as if the Orvana Copperwood mine project would bring back life to the White Pine sub. As for the White Pine refinery that is still unknown what will happen with that place, it doesn't appear Copperwood has any interest in the site. Smelting in Canada would most likely be used. As for the sm...
