Thanks to the old head NH and PC guys for the answers. I probably waved to you a time or two along the track around Hopewell Jct. Those days inspired me to have a RR career out west (38+ years so far) shortly after leaving the east. I have one more question. The siding at Beacon (on the ex-NYC) is e...

A couple of questions regarding this line: Did Maybrook trains always go to Cedar Hill or were there ever Maybrook--Oak Point trains on PC or even NH? How many Selkirk trains went to Oak Point vs. Cedar Hill? In the early 70's I always assumed there were two (one each way) daily Maybrook trains and ...

... Actually I prefer a sleeper passenger only lounge as was the case in the old days (and still is on the Canadian) but I suppose that's another pipe dream. You still can enjoy sleeper-only lounge on the Coast Starlight and Auto Train, I believe. I don't want to sound like a snob since I've done m...

#48 kept its Boston section to New York City with busses available for the Boston passengers I rode Chicago to Boston (booked a few weeks ago) Sunday 8/9 through Monday 8/10. I was booked 48 to cross platform transfer at Albany to 448. Are you saying that they've been booking that trip as a ride th...

Finished my trip on #8 (Empire Builder) and #48 (Lake Shore Limited) and can report on luggage capacities in the rooms. My luggage ended up being a small rolling suitcase of the kind that fits overhead on an airplane, a medium duffle, a full day pack and a car seat. We had a full bedroom on #8 and l...

I was under the impression that there were no more Boston sleepers. The timetable doesn't indicate sleepers on 448 and 449 and when I booked my trip it gave me a sleeper to Albany and coach to Boston. I would hope there would be a Boston sleeper again on this train. I've been all over Amtrak but nev...

Thanks for all the advice. Checking the bag early is not an option since I'm being driven 4 hours to the train in MT on Monday. But it would be a good idea if I was closer. I thought of getting off in Albany but here is the situation. I'm taking my four year old boy from MT to NH on his first overni...

But Rhinecliff is not a baggage station. Its only 45 minutes after the long stop at Albany. So it appears I have to live with the luggage in my room for 18 hours instead of 45 minutes. Maybe I'll bring soft luggage and call it pillows.

My son and I are booked on the LSL #48 Chicago to Rhinecliff on Tuesday and I was hoping to check luggage Chicago to Albany and retrieve the luggage during the 55 minute station stop in Albany but Amtrak says it can't be done. I don't really want to fill up our roomette with luggage overnight but it...

I was right in the heart of this operation growing up in Hopewell Jct. in the early seventies. I noticed that the Selkirk train always had 4 axle units (usually 5) and the Maybrook trains had 2 or 3 PC and EL units. Did you know of the reason for this? Was the Beacon branch restricted? Also why did ...

Perhaps you misunderstood my comment about the 70 mile double to single track project. It came about because of a CTC project either late 50's or early 60's (I've heard both from people that were there.) that left an excellent single track line with generous sidings. One of the motivations might hav...

Great argument for why the Milwaukee Pacific extension was doomed, Mark, but you forget one thing. All the things that made it difficult to operate made it attractive to railfans. Mountains, grades, partial electrification and the underdog status. You're confusing the issue with facts. To add to you...

Crush zone, eh? :( So what if the train is full, and they have trouble finding a seat-- where are conductors supposed to go to be relatively safe? Standing would be bad for anyone, you'd get tossed around the coach in a crash. Is that considered just part of the job? Yikes :P Yes the vestibule is d...
