Since you seem to imply that life has a measurable value and can be monetized, what is the value of a life? And where is you empirical evidence (since you demand that be presented) that central door locking hasn't reduced death and injury in railways? Gotta love when we get to this point in the arg...

I see that the cooperation between Amtrak and Siemens has been slowly declining since 2022. Hardly any major new contracts are being awarded to Siemens. Does anyone know if Amtrak has found a new partner? And if so, what is the reason for the change? Every few years Amtrak decides their mistakes ar...

It's operating on a publicly owned and taxpayer subsidized ROW and any problems that train has that have a negative impact on taxpayer subsidized services. Not only that, the cost of caring for the injured is picked up by taxpayers. It's all private gain and public risk to allow this company to con...

Trains buried the lede to throw shade on Siemens again... If these are really parts needed for regular or routine maintenance, then the real issue here isn't availability from Siemens, but some purchasing manager at Amtrak deciding it was wastefull to keep the required quantity of a part in stock. ...

I learned to do that on my car doors from a ski bum in high school! They would freeze shut and this dude told me to shoot the weather strip with wd40 and they won't freeze. Miracle!

There are really good reasons why discovery processes suck, mainly because lawyers are involved.... if you don't want to read that, skip below the rabbit hole warning... IN a nutshell, this. UP doesn't want you to have that info and if it disappears, it can't hurt them. Everybody does this includin...

With all due respect, that is completely false. The NTSB did NOT recommend retiring those cars. They recommended implementing standards for window retention. The whole Talgo situation has been the biggest boondoggle and the worst example of why government sucks at running a business. If BNSF owned ...

What happens when someone falls from a train? Police / EMS / whatever shutdown a railroad so they rescue the person or retrieve the body and to investigate. If this happened on the (just for the sake of the argument) on the NEC approaching Secaucus Junction This is commonly the line heard from UK r...

I never went to college in a busy metro area, but had I done so, I would've loved to rent an apartment in a Septa or Metra station.

LAUPT is owned by LACMTA, There's probably a deeper analysis required on this issue. LAUPT may be owned locally but Amtrak probably has a contract saying they manage certain aspects of the operation that might include veto power over certain issues. Do they control the tower and thus the traffic in...

The rule is now 20+ years old, and other heritage/charter operators have these mechanisms on their trains. Why should this one company (that has been repeatedly fined for safety violations and had a train operator jailed for violating a stop signal) get special treatment? An older BBC pieces notes ...

So there is a big kerfuffle over in Scotland right now over "central door locking". You have the Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig that runs a steamer and 6-8 Mk1 coaches from long ago. The doors, just like on our rolling stock, do not lock. This is a violation of UK code t...
