Thank you for your reply, and you are correct, with some diligent searching we found a photo showing the installation. Interestingly, the sand dome has a functional valve and does, indeed, seem to have a practical purpose. We have found that with a load of passengers and a damp track, pulling a slig...

"Little Toot" rebuild info needed

We at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami are restoring our Crown Metals "Little Toot" loco -- the 24 inch model. Somewhere in the past, the tubing that carries sand from the sand dome to the wheels was removed. We'd like to replace it, but have been unable to find any photos or diagra...

Re: Alco RS1 air compressor problem

Update on the problem --- we removed the caps and pistons from the unloaders, finding them to be moving freely, except for one cylinder which is throwing some oil, making the unloader kind of sticky. It, however, moves easily enough that we do not think it is stuck open. Air is moving in and out of ...

Alco RS1 air compressor problem

One of our RS1's -- 1951 build with Westinghouse air brakes --- is popping off the safety at 150 lbs pressure, when it has up to now happily cycled between 120 and 130 pounds. The overpressure blew out the old, brittle gasket in the governor, which we replaced. The governor does not seem to be the p...

Thank you, gentlemen, that's about what I suspected. I don't want to do any damage, as
replacing a loco would probably set my pension back WEEKS! :P

Arc welding on Alco RS-1

We're still working on one of our Alcos, needing to do some welding here and there. Question: is it safe to arc weld on the engine, or could the current damage anything electrical, or (since the engine is presumably grounded through the trucks) could stray current arc thru the bearings or whatever? ...

RS1 ground fault

We have an RS1 which needs a lot of TLC...having recently acquired new batteries, we're trying to get 'er running. One major problem is that at any speed faster than a walk, we get a ground fault and everything comes to a halt. Realizing that there are numerous places that this could be occuring, no...
