Yes, there is still a turntable in St Johnbury and it is operable. It is the former St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain/Maine Central table that used to service joint ownership roundhouse long long ago.

I was on the road between Montpelier and Barre and back again yesterday. There is a lot of evidence of very recent work on this line. A lot of ties have been replaced and in some areas new ballast has been spread. Some of the line in Barre, right alongside the road, especially, looks awful but impro...

The bridge that burned in Swanton was the former St. Johnbury and Lake Champlain/Lamoille Valley bridge. It is about rebuilt. Once the line crossed, it interchanged with the C.V. Just by the current CV tracks is a beautifully restored depot and museum. Also on these grounds the ST and LC maintained ...

Wow so the tracks west of Morrisville were "in service" in 1991? As I mentioned before, I thought they were way out of service. Looking at the line in Cambridge and Bershire back right before they ripped the line up amazed me as the track looked abandoned for 20 years (which I had assumed....

Lamoille Valley Excursion Train Route

Found this online today - http://timsfeedback.home.comcast.net/~timsfeedback/Lamoille_Valley_Limited.pdf. It is a pamphlet handed out to riders on the Lamoille Valley excursion train, listing rules for trainriding and a town by town explanation of the route. What confuses me, is that this document i...

Back around in that 2003 or so period, I was in the yard at Morrisville by the enginehouse and saw signs of scrapping/burning in that exact spot that locomotive is seen in that photo. Bits of medal, burned/cut brush, and some junction box/fuse switches on the ground. Towards the back of the engineho...

Railroad Ghost Towns

Cambridge Jct, Vermont. Once the junction of the Burlington and Lamoille R.R (Central Vermont) and the St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain Railroad (later the Lamoille Valley - tracks removed 1-2 years ago) It is strange to see photos of incredibly busy places that were business hubs for so long, then ...

Hello all. Was at Lake George this weekend, participating in a battle reenactment/encampment. Saw the old RR station which is now basically a tourist shop. A sign at the battle field park (I was camped next to it) showed a triple header steam consist with the lake steamer boats in the background. Th...

I seem to have a faint memory of that boxcar. If I'm correct, the rails were removed in 1997 to Littleton. I believe Littleton receives rail service from the other end of the line. And yes, I agree, it was an unneeded death.

I believe the bridge east of the depot you speak of (the removed one) was not condemned but was removed when the line was abandoned. I could be wrong, but something tells me it was removed for truck clearance with the promise that it could be put back in place if the area saw rails. I tell you, it w...

As a child (late 70s, early 80s) I remember looking out the windows of the car on 302 (on our way to Maine) and thinking it was so cool that the rail cars were right near the road. This was just past the Woodsville Station (which is still there.) I also remember the roundhouse, which at that time wa...

Can someone PLEASE tell me what the current status of this railroad is??? I read somewhere that it is a Canadian Pacific Railroad, but web searches have not turned up much of anything! I would really appreciate it. I am a Vermonter, but I have yet to find the time to take the 2 hour trek north to se...

Lamoille Valley Railroad RIP

I passed through Swanton last weekend and over the LVRR ROW. The crossing lights were still there, and the rails seemingly intact on the right side of the crossing (I saw a bunch of equipment stored there last year but the area is fenced and gated off. Wonder what became of this equipment.) The ROW ...

A used bookstore near my workplace here in Williston Vermont has a MINT complete set of Nimke's Rutland books. The price is $1000 for the set, and the owner WILL NOT sell them separately. I have hounded him for a couple years now. He recently sold another complete set to a gentleman in England for $...
